    Cattle vaccines

Worked calves today. Could not get Covexin 8 or Cavalry 9, I already had a couple bottles of Tetanus Antitoxin so when it’s gone it’ll be 2 rounds of BarVac CDT I believe it’s called. We used a Blackleg vaccine called 20/20 Vision 7 with Spur. It has a pinkeye vaccine in it. We also used...

    Rat tails

Yeah he’s kinda dirty back there. He’s got just thin strip of hair down his tail starting at his tail head. Then he’s got a bare spot on top of his shoulders too.

Here’s one of her with her tail visible, looks like to me she’s got a bit of tail switch.

    Rat tails

These are the two calves by our neighbors presumed Charolais cross bull. I can definitely see the rat tail look especially on the bull ( soon to be steer ). If there’s going to be much dock on him, I’ll just feed him out, he should be fine for a beef. If we keep the heifer will her calves be ok...

Cows calves by 3/4 Angus 1/4 Hereford bull.

This calf is currently about to have her first calf, we call her Patch. Her year younger sister a red calf apparently got bred at 5-6 months old and looks to be going to calve just a little later than Patch. Their sister bred the same way from the year before Patch is in our freezer because she...

    Fools rush in

@dave_shelby i think you’re right, most farmers and ranchers are basically honest hard working folks. The problem is there’s always a get rich scheme or at the very least an angle to exploit that attracts a lot folks and it becomes a marketing scheme. Most of those angles only work once and...

    The End of EPDs?

That's logical. I had always thought of ADG meaning Average Daily Gain. My thinking is though, and could be wrong but wouldn't a bigger growthier calf continue to grow whereas as smaller lighter calf at weaning might get to a finish first and just put on fat at a quicker point than a larger...

    The End of EPDs?

I see the weaning and yearling weights are in the 30-35% respectively and the ADG is 50%. It looks like those percentages should be closer if the weights are well above average why isn’t the ADG above average as well? With the increased weaning and yearling EPD’s the ADG only went up .01 with...

    Hereford markings

My understanding is that even if just one parent is purebred Hereford the face should not be solid, it could be mottled though. I have actually heard of folks getting solid faced calves from commercial cows bred to registered Hereford bulls. The implication being that there is something else in...

Best first cow to get to raise to breed for beef and gentle disposition. What is best age to get them? I would like to get 2 and raise 2 calves

It's a long program to buy cows and raise calves to finish out for beef. Then you've got to either have a bull or AI breed the cows. @Warren Allison is right it might be better to start out with a couple steers. If you are real concerned about disposition of the animals then my preference is to...

    Reckon what cross she is?

The funny thing is this cow was purchased through a Hereford influence sale that is supposed to be just for calves with 50% or more white face and only British breeding. In the group she was in there was an obvious braford too. I didn’t mind they both made great cows but they didn’t grade them...

    Reckon what cross she is?

She has in the past been bred to registered black Angus bulls some AI and she typically has a black or very dark but a brownish tint. She has even had one black calf mottled face and white on udder and flank with sone red brindle from an Angus.

We’ve had some good rains, but I’m already getting worried, it’s been raining in some places nearby but we’ve just gotten a sprinkle the last couple times.
