    Why cow hates calf?

I had a 4 week old calf killed a month ago by a cow. She ran him down and broke his back. Ann B

    Please Help!

The problem is that the classifiers aren't necessarily as good at identifying breeds as they should be. We have the same problem in our County Fair (State Fair too), one year the classifier for the cattle was a goat breeder, another year it was a guy that raised Llamas. I'm sure these people...

    Tricolor Holstein

The only "Tri-colored Holstein" that I've ever seen turned out to be a cross. Beautiful animal and she successfully combines the best qualities of all 3 breeds. She was the result of an accidental breeding. Her dam is Jersey/Guernsey and her sire was a Guernsey/Holstein who was banded by...

Do We Need 1000 LB Weaning Weights?

The name Mini Jersey is misleading -- these guys are the ORIGINAL Jerseys. They are quite a bit smaller than these huge American Jerseys, but they're not as small as some of the Miniature breeds. I think they can be registered up to 46" at the hip (with measurement taken at 3 years of age), but...

Do We Need 1000 LB Weaning Weights?

Not my cattle -- but with this guy, if they're not bred when calves are weaned, they grow wheels. Personally, I tend to be more lenient, but then I only keep a handful of mostly registered Mini Jerseys and like any Jersey, the good producers take longer to breed back. Ann B

Do We Need 1000 LB Weaning Weights?

Bragging rights do seem to outweight what I would consider more important components. I know a fellow who brags about his high birthweights (Angus and Angus cross). He considers anything under 100 lbs to be too small. Couple (2 or 3) years ago he pulled a 127 lb calf out of a first-calf heifer...

    breeding question

Hi Ellie Jersey, no question. And I like the "original" (aka Miniature) Jerseys even better. Good production compared to body weight, good temperaments, high butterfat, and a good portion of the Miniature Jerseys are polled.

    breeding question

Since you can't find a Jersey bull, have you considered AI? You can get semen from good Jersey bulls for $12-$20. Another good option on a Jersey cow is a Guernsey bull. Ann B

    breeding question

25 lb calves come from Jerseys that are heavy with the Old World bloodlines. NO cow of a Jersey's size could "stunt" the calf enough to make a Brown Swiss a safe mating. Ann B

Can anyone on here graze cattle all winter long?

Gotta question for you DR We're moving to about 10 miles north of Okeechobee, the move is planned for early next spring, although the buyer on this place wants to push it up to January. The place we bought down there is basically a hammock -- beautiful oaks, tall pines, and lots of palmetto...

    choosing the right bull....

Belties are known for throwing small calves. But if you're wondering about coloration -- this color cross has been developed into a new breed in the Miniature cattle. Miniature Herefords, crossed to the Mini Belted Galloways, produce belted cattle with whiteface and color around the eyes --...

    Twin bull?

2 eggs produce fraternal twins. One egg that splits produces identical twins. Ann B

    Twin bull?

There is a male component in twinning -- male IDENTICAL twins are more likely to throw twins. Ann B

    F1 Longhorn cross cows

My Dad has 4 Red Angus/Longhorn cross cows and he's real happy with them. They calve easy and raise good (usually Red) calves that bring exactly the same as the straightbred Red Angus. Ann B

    Due

I've induced one cow, a Jersey, approximately 1 week before her due date -- with vet's approval. Our reason was because her udder was shot and hung so low that she would step on it when dry. It was obvious that if she bagged up before going into labor, there was going to be trouble. Since she...

    Due

.2 to .6 sounds like the average from conception to birth. The calf puts on a good portion of it's weight in the last month. I was reading somewhere a couple of days ago that in that last week before birth, the calf can gain as much as 2 lbs a day. Don't ask me where, I don't remember --...

    Miniature Jerseys

What are you referring to as a "mid-sized"? The American Miniature Jersey Cattle Association registers Miniature Jerseys that are up to 46" at the hip (both parents must also be registered). The International Miniature Cattle Breeders Society separates into standard, mid-sized, and mini, and...
