    Plateau in the EPD race?

"I don't trust epds" "I choose moderate epds" "People chase epds, I stay in the middle" All these thoughts baffle me. You do find merit in the process or you don't. Why only think things are ok at an ever-changing average? If you didnt think the average should have changed, you should be...

    Plateau in the EPD race?

The question I pose is if you think "maternal" is at the 60th percentile, but weights keep increasing, which is really the criteria? Are we choosing on a specific weight or on the percentiile in an ever-increasing environment? To me you're either on board with epds or you're opposed to them...

    Plateau in the EPD race?

Why is it that, in Angus, 10 years ago 80lbs yearling was maternal and anything above was terminal? Same people today will claim that 110 is maternal but 140 isn't. My question... If you have no faith in epds as a tool, why consult them at all? The trailing target method confuses me.

    Should I use Gar Prophet?

QH Manning out of a 4yo Prophet dam. I have another from this cross that ended up with the same amount of white. Mostly testing the picture upload but have had little success.

    Should I use Gar Prophet?

My cows never really have foot issues. I've always been perplexed by those that focus on that. My bulls will get foot problems more frequently. I did have one cow that kept a limp for years. Other than those, a cow will injure her foot, limp 2 weeks, then recover. I keep them around 13 years...

    Should I use Gar Prophet?

I tend to breed the entire herd to one bull AI for a couple years. So I have large groups of daughters from a handful of bulls. My Deer Valley All In daughters didn't have any problems at all on over 90 births so far. That's not the case on my Prophet daughters. That's CEM more than CED though.

    Hauling after AI

From what I've read on the issue it seems the consensus is move them immediately or after breeding season. Around 48 to 72hrs seems to be a horrible time to stress them.

    Should I use Gar Prophet?

I have a lot of Prophet daughters. I wouldn't use him again. I think his milk is too hard on younger cows. It could be his extreme DMI. Those that made it to 4 year olds are great but I lost a lot on the way. He's a hard doer. He adds white to most calves too. That wasn't an issue for my...

Getting prepared for 2018 Breeding Season

I bred to Quaker Hill Manning this season and last. I'm just a commercial herd but I like the calves so far. They are about 3 months old now.

    Plateau in the EPD race?

The radg component is the biggest curveball. Efficiency could gain us the most as an industry but few measure it. So $b when based on extreme radg with no data is very susceptible to fall. I think falling back to the $160 to $180 range could be advisable to choosing a $230 propped up on a...

    100% AI?

If you're time AI'ing and using gnrh to force them to cycle, the semen can be good for 24hrs inside the cow so I wait at least that long. But I'm using AI bulls I could never hope to afford to buy.

    100% AI?

Time AI them on the 14day cidr protocol then put a patch on 14 days later and watch them. You should get most of them on 2 cycles. Hire an experienced technician the first round at least.

    AI today???

There is some talk these days about new cidrs being too potent for heifers. The theory being it isn't leaving their system after it's taken out. So I've heard some are using used cidrs for heifers. I've had the best luck with the 14day cidr protocol using new ones. Also, I breed everything on...

select sire bull named progression ?

Do you know his cane code, full name, or registration number?

    7 day + CIDR question

My AI tech was explaining that Cidrs may be too potent for heifers so going to used Cidrs or 5 day protocal helps. I use the 33 day protocal that has the Cidrs in 14 days. It allows them to cycle once then catches them on the next. It helps with heifers that may be cycling for the first time as...

    EPD's are BS

Maybe the milk EPD isn't what you think it is. The Milk EPD is measuring milk and mothering ability of the bull's daughters but it is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. So a "pound of milk" is actually a pound of calf. The bull you are referencing is relatively young and is just now having...

Advice for expanding use of AI

I've been using the 14 day CIDR protocol for heifers and AI has raised to 70%. The longer the CIDR is in the better. I have much better results with 7 day on cows than 5 day. Most of the literature will say there is a small advantage to 7 over 5 but I found it to be greater than 10% plus...

    Timed AI in Heifers

I would not turn a bull with them for 24 hours. That semen you put in them will still be viable for that long. most people would prefer the AI bull to be the sire. Not sure why you would spend the money on semen to let your herd bull win the race.
