    Semen for 24

I only have a few heifers that I retained this year, most were shipped due to the lingering drought. A little over half of these heifers were sired by Tehama Tahoe B767, I bred them this week to ZWT Summitt 6507.

    Cow-Calf pics

Yes, it's the same pair in both pics. The calf was born October 2022 and the second pic is June of this year. Tomorrow he will be taken to the sale barn with some others to find a new home.

@GoWyo thanks, we have another chance of rain this evening, maybe I won't miss out this time. For me the drought this year is every bit as bad as it was last year, I'm still downsizing the herd. Here's one of my first calf heifers that seems to be doing a good job. Grandsire of the calf is AAR...

    Cow-Calf pics

I love seeing cow-calf pairs that are doing a great job of calf raising. I'm also jealous of your green grass, I seem to be in the vortex that is missing all of the rains.

    Ellingson Angus Vs SAV

I have no knowledge of Ellingson and for SAV I tend to stay away from all of their bulls because of extremely low marbling. I'm also very skeptical of whether or not their cattle would work in my program, they advertise 1000 lb weaning weights, which I don't know how to replicate in my environment.

Square B Atlantis or True North

I found this link to a video of a nice-looking group of True North offspring https://fb.watch/hcTI0FrpOg/

Square B Atlantis or True North

Which one is your top pick between Square B Atlantis and True North? What is the reasoning for picking one over the other?

    Tehema Tahoe

Here's a few calves sired by Tehama Tahoe from first calf heifers, all born unassisted with no problems, they came small and are growing quickly. I reserve any judgements until I see how they develop, but so far, they seem to have good temperaments and aren't flighty. J+

    AI on Monday

@GoWyo, I appreciate the feedback, you saved me two years that we can never get back. I guess Plus One wasn't the best choice, but it also sounds like it wasn't the worst. Lots of people need structurally correct, moderate framed cattle. You had quite good things to say about the growth of...

    AI on Monday

@GoWyo I'm curious about how your E&B Plus One calves turned out, how would you rate them compared to your other calves? Did you save and breed any of the heifers?

Using old semen can be fun but.....

This is the bull I thought you were going to use. Frame 7, low marbling. https://www.universalsemensales.com/breeds/angus/leachman-right-time

Using old semen can be fun but.....

Seems like an expensive semen choice for a commercial herd but, he should work well as long as you like tall cattle and don't retain ownership of the calves through the feedlot or sell them on a grid marketing system.

Using old semen can be fun but.....

I hope you trashed the rest of the old semen from that sire, or used it for terminal calves, since we don't eat the feet.

    PRLR-SLICK cattle

Does that mean they have to be labeled as GMO? I’m sure it’s already happening more than we know but I don’t like the idea of man messing with genetic code. Lots of damage can be done with the best of intentions.

    Marbling...how much should you care?

The consumer makes buying decisions with their wallet. At the sale barn, the buyer is your consumer's representative. The trend for many years now has been that quality is key to receiving the top price and marbling has been linked in people's mind as leading to a quality product. I know that...

    Marbling...how much should you care?

I agree SimAngus makes a good cross but if I was breeding for this cross, I would still want to see the marbling EPD of the sire. Simme bulls just like Angus bulls can have a marbling EPD that ranges from positive to negative.

    Marbling...how much should you care?

I found this table which correlates Marbling EPDs to CAB acceptance. This allows you to determine how much is enough based on your goals. The link is here so you can read the full article. It talks about "nurture versus nature", or rather the environmental/management aspect of marbling...

    Thoughts on this bull

I agree a personal dislike with too many bulls today are the sway backs that look like the bottom of a rocking chair.

    Thoughts on this bull

I'm posting this so people can brush up on how foot scoring works, a score of 5 is ideal the further away from 5 you get the worse the score. A good EPD should correlate to a foot score of 5...

    Thoughts on this bull

@Ebenezer share with us the names of these great ones you speak of that are filling all of these tanks. Are these great ones affordable to the commercial cattle raisers?
