price of barly rye and wheat

I don't know about rye, but we just sold a load of barley for $200/MT. Wheat will be trading higher then that for clean wheat. I wouldn't want to feed "feed wheat" to hogs, it will have too many vomitoxins in it.

    Clover Baleage

You said you were feeding small amounts of grain. Put the salt in the grain, problem solved. If you're concerned about grass tetany get a hay test taken, it's pretty cheap insurance. You're eNDF should be fine in the clover baleage to stimulate cud-chewing.

    GMO Feed

Sorry to bust your bubble, but GMO, conventional or organic, that isn't going to happen. Accidents happen. Food preparation mistakes in your own kitchen happen. Drinking tea affects your immune system. (Yes, the wonderful tannins that bind free radicals affects your bodies response to some...

    GMO Feed

I can't really add much more. If you are going to wait until "somebody figures it out" then you will never use transgenics. Everything is a calculated risk. I apologize, I didn't intend to intentionally gloss over a statement. For the record, I do believe the two (transgenic vs not) are not...

    GMO Feed

I haven't read the study you are referring to, but in medicine that is known as the placebo effect. It is very real, but at the same time almost impossible to predict.

    GMO Feed

Okay, but we're still not discussing the same things. I feel the point about transgenics in an organic system has been addressed. Nobody, least of all me, has said that transgenic is natural. I challenge you to quote somebody within this thread that stated that it is. As to the USDA saying it...

    GMO Feed

Alright, I'll answer your questions. But you need to answer mine. I prefer real sugar, buttar to margarine and we drink whole milk. I won't argue that grass-fed beef CAN be healthier than the grain-fed beef you buy at the store. But amongst all your rhetoric you haven't defended why you...

    GMO Feed

Yes.... what an awful thing.

    GMO Feed

I'm going to step into this discussion. First topic was the GMO feed. If the issue with GMO's is the chemical "unnatural" tinkering done in a laboratory than you need to discard any conventional seed variety and return to using landraces. Some of the conventional plant breeding methods used...

    Gravity flow feed bins

We NEED to see pictures of that! You can't leave us all hanging like that. :P

    Feeder steer situation

That'll show up quick. With the guys doing the MLV scheme throughout the herd (Cows, bulls, bred heifers and calves) the mortality and morbidity rates in the feedlot drop to WELL below industry average, and response to treatment is much higher. (No repeat treaters, the goal is to eliminate...

    Feeder steer situation

What dun said. Aaron, I know Jeff was involved in getting that sale going, and he got a copy of our sale protocol from down here. We don't have fieldmen check the cattle, but there is a horn tax and a nut tax. Each calf going through the sale has a unique management tag, so if there is a...

    soybean meal vs ground soybean

Assuming you are feeding a "proper" amount of corn to begin with, and not filling your cattle full, then you would only be adding the soybean meal. If, however you have been feeding just corn with a source of roughage than when you balance the ration you may find that the amount of corn you are...

    soybean meal vs ground soybean

For the steers it doesn't matter. Balance your ration and figure which one is more cost effective. Don't look at just the cost of the soybeans or soybean meal, but take into account how much corn you are "bumping" from the ration by including one or the other. For the pigs beware the ground...

    Stretching hay

It would depend on the year. Would you make more selling yearlings early, or buying expensive hay and putting a bit more gain on? I agree with not crediting the full fertilizer value too. Fortunately we don't have super high P levels, so I can maybe extract more value from purchased forage.

    Feeding sunflower seeds

At least y'all can hunt them! They are still a protected migratory bird up here.

    loose minerals

Where are you? We don't really need mineral. The only one we need is Selenium, so we feed loose salt free choice with trace minerals, and make sure there is selenium in it. I will admit ours don't always have it in front of them, and they don't suffer for it.

    Soybean meal vs. canola meal

First I will state that I am biased, as I'm a director on Ontario's Canola Growers Board. BUT, the research done in Western Canada on canola meal vs. soymeal would indicate that you can expect a milk production boost from using canola meal, when you re-balance your ration. It is a very...

    Stretching hay

Not necessarily up here in the northern tier. I can buy cow hay cheaper than I can grow it and bale it myself at least 4 years out of 5. So if you factor in the cost savings on the stored feed you are buying in, and then credit yourself for the fertilizer value of the feed, less what the cows...

    Holstein Steers

That's why there is an advantage. How many times does the top-selling pen of steers from the calf sale net the most dollars for the feedlot at the end of the line? LOL, the most profitable calves tend to be the ones that are discounted for colour or breed purposes and sharp buyers with a good...
