    Spring calving vs fall calving

    I agree with that.

    Spring calving vs fall calving

Do you administer the same hard culling with your registered cattle, or just your commercial group? The reason I ask is that sometimes I have had more tied up in bought hfrs than I want to lose with just one hiccup after raising that first calf. A fault I've brought on myself, thinking I was...

    Spring calving vs fall calving

I thought maybe you had heard of a different pasture species that is hardy enough to compete with fescue, or maybe a mineral that I haven't heard of. With rain, the clipping helps a lot. I havent been having much luck with red clover development, but the wild white still comes on really good...

    Spring calving vs fall calving

Care to share what some of those may be? I had some issues last summer on breed backs. It got hot here the first half of May. Turn out was Memorial Day to July 25. Hot, humid, and miserable a lot of that time. 6 of 10 calved in March. Of the four left, I can maybe make excuses for two of them...

When genetics throw you a curve ball

I bought my first set of hfrs (bred) I calved out and had quite a bit of trouble. The next hfrs were my own and I wanted to see where they were in size. I had no trouble with them, not having anything to do with the measuring, but I didn't have to worry about that in the meantime. I was gunshy...

When genetics throw you a curve ball

I didn't have my current hfrs measured. Hoping for the best

    Weak calf questions?

I have a basic bottle for tubing. It was a pia to get any flow going. I poked a hole near the bottom, made sure the bottle was dry, and stuck some good tape over the hole. Once you get the tube down, feeling the tube going down the left side of the throat, you can pull the tape off and things go...

1 out of 7 Heifers Pregnant

Do you have a link to the study/research? I have not been able to find it with a brief search. I am trying to understand what you are saying? To supplement with higher quality hay instead of grain? Is it a problem with grain when calves are overconditioned, or are you saying giving 10 lbs of...

I'm assuming you mean supplementing with something other than grain?

    Stacking low birth weight genetics

Thank you for bringing this up gizmom, it's something I've been thinking about lately. What do you think would qualify as a low bw/high ce epd? Do you think that the ce is more important to watch than the bw in regards to future problems?

    Hiding a calf

I don't like going too long in the hot late summer without seeing newborns. Flystrike is a painful thing. I had one get it, he stayed hid out in an area the cow couldn't get to him. We had been without rain during that time to wash him off. In hindsight, I think he didn't get cleaned real good...

Times up not a happy bull.

Yes. I like him TG. He looks about like I figured he would.

2nd calf heifer with no milk

I might have misled, so I will clarify. My pastures are predominantly fescue and are treated as such. In the spring, and the fall with sufficient rain, I will have some amount of clover. In the summer, when the fescue quits growing, I will have some wsg's come on, some pastures more than others...

2nd calf heifer with no milk

Just because they are slow to come to milk once doesn't mean they will do that again. Every weather year and every calf is different. That said, if thats strike two, then do what you need to. I give them all two shots to make it happen, if I like them. The fescue thing is a problem, or not. Hard...

    Exceeding Expectations

Yes. I have a favorite heifer now, her calf is the oldest by a few days, but is really growing. I was bragging on her to my wife one day, then later saw him slipping in on another heifer while her calf was sucking.

TC, did he outdo the others so much because of her, or his resourcefulness?

2nd calf heifer with no milk

I'm assuming you are trying to milk the cow some with her being separated from the calf? LIke every day, at least. I think that the stimulation of that calf beating her for something to eat will help the cause too?
