    Smallest calf ever for us.

Always rember when I watched 80 heifers calving for a friend. Had one that couldn't reach the heifers tit, he was so small. I was determined he would survive. Spent several days making sure. When Lance got back, he named him 6 pack because of the beer bottles laying around. Think he weighed 275...

    Spring calving vs fall calving

Hook, I would think spring calves in Tn. mean Jan calves. You gonna be around that time of the year? Not used to winter of any kind, I would go fall and get a little look at what winter means there. But then, don't listen to me, I only drive through West Memphis on my way to Florida for the winter.

    Defined Breeding Season (or not)

Markets here. Not able to really sell a Dec. Or July calf as a weakling. Weaning. Auto correct. A few oddballs are a pain to take care correctly. Gs

    Three In One Day...

Several years ago I had 17 in one day. 92 out of 93 called in 33 days. In Feb in northern Missouri. I barely remember it. Never seemed to sleep that winter. Gs

Spring vs fall calving and why???

I disagree with that. Have several fall cows that were simply spring bred heifers that raised a good calf, but were too thin to breed back. They went into the fall herd and haven't missed in years. Have some that are 11 this year and bred back. gs

    Over-conditioning and Calving Ease

Thanks for sayin' that Kenrsie, have heard too many times, " I fed my cows some grain, (or some really good hay, etc) and when I checked them my normal every four days during calving season, all I had was trouble. Gotta' be because they had too much feed." One university study found that feeding...

    Forgetful Cows

Not wantin' to change the subject, but do coyotes really bother calves in certain areas. I got coyotes everywhere, see them in the pastures all the time. Last year mowed some extra grass in the two year old pasture. Had a coyote follow the mower looking for mice or something. The two year olds...

    Influencing Calving Times

    Calving Season Routine

Pretty much what I do Randi, except not as many as you and I do it around a full time plumbing business. Doesn't matter when you feed them, they still gotta' be checked. I feed early morning, and most of mine are born around 4 AM or so. Works for me, cuz' then I can go to work for awhile, return...

100% of cows open with fertility tested bulls

A lot of times, not always, the owner suspects what it is, but doesn't want to admit it to anyone or even himself. gs

    Fall Calf Weights

I like the quarter bloods. In fact, I synced my commercial fall calvers to a 50/50 bull the other day to add a little less Simi. They were bred by natural service to a BeefMaker son last year. I do not know what they were on the maternal side. Long story. Thought I had a little to much variance...

    Fall Calf Weights

Synced a bunch to HIgh Voltage this year. Liked what I have seen on his daughters. Just asking, why so many different bulls. Know you have a small herd, but don't you think of consistency? gs

    Stick-on heat detection patches

You can get them in any color, would be hard to see hot pink on hot pink cows. gs

    Bull or heifer issue?

Trying to figure out why you would do the same thing this year that failed last year. Why on earth didn't you find the problem last November? gs

Got to see my first BSE

I always get the letters of checking a bull and the mad cow disease letters mixed up. Thought he got to see his first mad cow. gs

    Big Boy Jr.

I read some of this. WOW. Got a few questions-------What is a "helper bull" is that a bull in a pasture that will let the better bull breed the cows unless he need "help"? Is there an EPD for better tasting that I don't know about. It was stated that black baldys were " known as better...

    Mortality This Winter

Tom, I got the third from the guy in the OP. He lost 29 out of 100. Did sound like I was callin' you out didn't it. This winter is getting to me, I'm usually not that way. When the winter hit we still had 2 months of outside work to do. Then I picked up the normal amount for spring, know how...

    Mortality This Winter

If what you lost totals a third of your crop, you either shouldn't have cattle, or change the management style. I've lost 6 now, that's more than I've ever lost. 5 of them were alive when born, just couldn't keep them that way. The other was from me not taking care of business, he was dead when...

    Mortality This Winter

You lose 29 calves and a "few cows", you shouldn't have cattle. Oh, forgot!!! The cattle work for him, he doesn't work for the cattle. gs

    Calving assist setup?

I built a very simple calving pen based on what powder river and Linn Pipe and Post have. Wooden headgate, crowd gate, both gates open to allow access to cow. However, I usually only have to open one gate for them. Best thing I ever built. Cost was next to nothing, used materials I had. gs
