bottle feeding 2 or 3 week old calf

As far as I'm concerned, I'll never be an "expert", because everyday you learn something new when dealing with cattle. Without sounding "woo-woo", I spend a lot of time "learning" my animals. Time well spent as far as I'm concerned.

bottle feeding 2 or 3 week old calf

Let her decide how much to eat. Some calves, especially smaller ones can't quite handle a full 2 qts at a time. You may have to spend a little extra time feeding in "cycles" with her, but if she remains vibrant, healthy, etc., she'll let you know. The grain/alfalfa isn't doing her much good as...

bottle feeding 2 or 3 week old calf

Not sure where you're at, I give mine mid-day electrolyte bottle (1Qt). Honestly, I would tube feed as much as it takes. I just fed a little bugger I got in on Fri., was on a cow, and he finally realized the whole bottle "thing". Do 2 full qts. if she's a big calf, break it up 1qt at a time if...

bottle feeding 2 or 3 week old calf

Take the water away. If it did come off a cow, it'll be a couple days to get used to the bottle. If its healthy it WILL get hungry. It also helps if you have more than one calf, I usually put the problem one like that in with a bit older calf, they learn quickly what the bottle is for. IMO, if...

    Dead Calves in Heifers

That is correct, all AI'd, moved into the calving pen about 2 weeks prior to due date. Calves were small, as usual for first calf. Computer matched AI-ing. I'm leaning toward Lepto, although everything is vaccinated. Weather has been opressive the last week or two, may have an effect? Hopefully...

    Dead Calves in Heifers

Honstly, the dairy is about "buns-up" right now, so owner's attitude is one of disinterest. All feed is always tested on a regular basis, as I'm in charge of that, so I don't think that's a problem. This isn't really my "department" there, just happened to be there on a skeleton crew day, and...

    Dead Calves in Heifers

Yeah, OK, they weren't "virgin" heifers...First-calf-heifers...Ok.. they're not mine I just work there, but the boss today said he doesn't want to spend any money on postops, or checking any of the rest of them, so I guess he's a big gambler? The vet just shrugged his shoulders, and seemed...

    Dead Calves in Heifers

Ok, these heifers are Holsteins, but I figured bovine is bovine in this case. Here's the strange scenario: 7 virgin heifers, about 3 weeks to actual due date. 4 had started to calve, but were in distress. Too many for 2 guys to deal with, so we called the vet. No feet feeling, only head, vet...
