    Big boy

Nice calf. Sometimes they will give you fits trying to figure out what’s going on like if they nursed or not. I never did use Rampage or any suns but always figured he would probably be a bull I liked in terms of frame and growth of calves.

Variety is the spice of life.

Good looking cattle. The variety looks somewhat familiar.

    We had hoped for two.

We had a cow a few years ago that had had I believe 3 calves prior I'd had her since a yearling heifer. She got to looking huge a few months before she was due. I thought sure she was going to twin. When she finally did start to calve and didn't right away like usual, I got her in and tried to...

A ways to green grass yet.

Agree @Lazy M my hat is off to y’all in the north. We ran out of hay by the 20th of March. I usually feed hay through till first of April give or take a few days and they’ve typically slowed way down in hay by then.

    Got milk?

I thought that calf marked like that had some Simmental in it.

Red angus or red baldie heifers?

Years ago I got interested in Senepol cattle. I saw them pictured in an article from an old Drovers Journal from the late 70’s. I was just a child but thought they were interesting. They never caught on like I thought they might and never saw or heard of any locally. I believe from what I have...

    Wrong but consistant

Sounds consistent as far as preg check results. I think a lot of times at the stockyards, they are running through fast and probably not putting a lot of time into trying to determine as close as possible. The vet we get to check ours said it’s difficult to pinpoint exact timing once it gets to...

Reckon what the vet meant with the statement don’t read to much in to that or whatever was said?

If those bulls were in real poor shape that would be a a factor in not passing a semen check. Bull was probably in better shape when he bred the cows that were there. Not uncommon for some Jersey cows to look poor but if a bull is in comparable condition to what I’m visualizing the Jersey cow...

The solid red is her own calf, thus far I’ve left him with her and he’s been nursing the front quarters whenever he wants.I’ve been separating the other two calves away from the cow in between feedings. I’ll soon turn the cow out and let her back in to the calves then they’ll all nurse at the...

Yeah, I time them and get away from the cow at around five minutes till they get a little age. So far I’ve been leaving her calf with her, he nurses the front quarters whenever he wants. I’ll soon put her out and let her back in twice a day to the 3.

Found another heifer with a calf this morning. Carried it to the barn and put the pair up till after church, to make sure it had colostrum and to check if the heifer has milk. So far everything is as it should be, calf has nursed and heifer has milk in all quarters though it is a small udder it...

@Travlr im I agreement with you that I prefer not to inbreed. I also see the point @Brute 23 is making about stockyard cows. It can be a real roll of the dice, so many factors play into it. Back to Travlr's comments, that is the reason that I shared the experiences that we are currently having...

The fun with heifers calving continues.

I did not blame everything on inbreeding and I specifically said that I thought the genetics of the bull (from registered animals not from stockyards) were to blame for no milk. I did say that inbreeding of the sire to some of the daughters could have been a factor in the real small calves and...

No, but we did get her in the chute and got the calf to nurse her some

The 2 year old heifers calving are not inbred themselves. The baby calves they are having are inbred. The bulls that we have been using do sire very small calves out of most heifers. We have been trying to bring in outside genetics ie other unrelated bulls even different breeds but have had a...

Pretty much all these heifers are daughters or granddaughters of heifers I’ve bought through stockyards over the years. I’ve had some of the cows as long as 10 years and retained other daughters from several of them. My thinking is it’s coming from their sire.
