    How many Bred Heifers?

Amen.To the home raised heifers. They are a product of my management and environment. I'm trying to build numbers so I've had to buy. It hasn't been much to brag about. I don't treat my heifers a lot different than my cows. They calve in the same time frame as the main herd. I do calve them...

    Stupid cow

Isn't it interesting how some say "She's my best cow or she's such a good cow-- I really hate to get rid of her." Huh? A sucking cow cannot be a GOOD cow. Larry Leonhardt said "the best cow is the one who goes un-noticed the longest."

    Stupid cow

You go ahead and keep that cow...let her teach others to rob....let her cheat that calf out of what he needs to grow...let her destroy another cows udder......let the neighbors drive by and see her sucking another cow.....let her own calf be junk because of her selfish desires. I have zero...

    bulls not equally prolific

Yeah dun. I thought it was more informative than it is. I tried to listen to the Webinar and couldn't stand to listen to the woman presenting it. Then-I tried to delete the topic and can't do that either. :hide:

    Heat stress and preg testing

Thanks everyone for offering suggestions. I realize I may never know the cause of the high percentage of opens. I have bought a new bull to put on this next years heifers and we're going to build some sort of shade in this pasture for cattle comfort. Other than that-it's business as usual...

    Heat stress and preg testing

I ultrasound. And, it's only as good as the person running the probe. A pregnancy is easy to detect. I always take more time with an open because it's a financial thing and possibly the sale of a cow. Pregnancies 35 days to 6 months are straight forward. 8-9 months take a little more effort. I...

    Composite Bulls ?

Nobody proof read the cover of their catalog? wow.... yeah I know-too picky but a shiny catalog and a glaring error on the cover. :bang:

    Heat stress and preg testing

I'd sure like to think there's little to no Roundup exposure, Dun. I've got a road to the north, road along the east with a pasture across that road.....actually, I'm surrounded by other pastures. There are Fall herds in the pasture south and west of me, so no bull pressure. I don't spray...

    Heat stress and preg testing

Yes, the heifers had been examined by my vet. I asked him if the bull had problems with the heat, would it be a reoccurring event. He said 'No. It's something that hits a bull one year and not the next. No way to know other than pulling him part way through the breeding season and have him...

    Heat stress and preg testing

I'm lost.....I have a group of 22 Angus yearling heifers that were pasture exposed from May 27 - July 27. We brought them home Saturday and I preg checked them Sunday. 6 were open. I took the bull to the vet yesterday and he tested good. Veterinarian stained the sample and checked for...

    Angus Heifer bull ideas

With a +32 on milk and a -$17.85 Energy, I don't see any 'maternal power'. I see a bull who sires feed lot calves.

    Calving in late summer

Snoopdog, I'm in Kansas and have a spring and a fall calving herd. Falls usually start calving the 5th of Sept. As hot as we are in September I sometimes think I have them starting too early. Heat is so awful hard on a newborn calf. The cows calve for 60 days so if I try to push farther into...

How many Test Crosses are needed

http://onpasture.com/2014/10/20/breedin ... -breeding/ Before the advent of genetic testing for recessive traits the only way to statistically ensure genetic “purity” of a bull/ram/buck etc. was to breed that bull to 35 of his own daughters concurrently. If no genetic defects show up in any of...

    Scantech PT-1 Ultrasound

Good for you. There's a learning curve for sure. I have a ReproScan ultrasound. It has a probe and a monitor or screen to show what the probe sees. I went to a school to learn and there was some frustration early-on at my lack of ability. I only use mine for myself-I will not ultrasound for...

    Scantech PT-1 Ultrasound

Hey Nesikep. Hope I didn't run you off. What are your thoughts on this scanner? For $300 you're not going to get hurt too much-right?

    Heifer percentage

I calve in March & April. This group would have been 13-14 months old when first exposed with them calving right at their two year old birth date. They are Angus. Older type genetics-Wye & Shoshone. I do my own ultra-sounding.
