    Breeding back issues

He was semen tested in October 2011 when we got him as a two year old. What could make a bull with only five cows to service lose a good sperm count? The other day I pulled up to the fence on the tractor with some grain to feed and the guy blew a load for no apparent reason other than he wanted...

    Breeding back issues

In October of 2011 we bought a new herd bull along with three new bred heifers. The heifers started calving, on time, in mid January of 2012 along with our other cows, we have only five total. Now as it turns out in 2013 two out if the five where late to have calves. 2014 and two, two different...

Yes, he has plenty of young guys to play with.

When should I wean this calf?

I have a four month old calf whos dam I want to cull. Should I wait until he is 6 months old or just go ahead and cull her? In my area August is the best time for cull cows to sell.

Turning it over in my mind..................................

Dun, You mentioned in the other thread that he was a terminal bull because his heifers would have poor calving and do harm to the genetics of the breed. How would you insure that anyone you sold semen to would not use heifers off him and start an undesirable breeding program? I know he would...

Turning it over in my mind..................................

I have never A.I.ed before but would there be a market via private treaty? Kinda like selling locally to your community avoiding shipping costs. Selling to the guy who keeps asking to rent or buy your bull? I know I would like that. If I could go see a bull in person as well as look at his...

    A.I. costs...would I be better off.

Well, really with the cost of buying a bull, dewormer, vaccs and feed all year long for very few cows. It is seems that I could take an A.I class, buy semen, buy a tank ,pay the service fees and still be money ahead even if It takes me a couple of months to get it right. Am I looking at it the...

    A.I. costs...would I be better off.

I appreciate the comments....keep them coming. Anyone know of an A.I. class in my area? This maybe the way I go instead of keeping a bull all year long.

    A.I. costs...would I be better off.

Because I have so few cows I am considering taking an A.I. course and buying a tank. What is an average price for a tank and monthly fee? When buying semen, how few straws can you purchase?

    20 cow herd- not settling

I read up on Trich seeing as how someone said it is a problem in the south. If it is Trich he is looking at then. It looks like you could have a bull bring it into a herd and the cows stay infected until they have done through several heat cycles with out the bull around. The bull however can...

What would you do about the heifers?

I do separate them to grain them out but I only grain out for two months and they are 16-17 mths old when I start. So, my question is if I kept the heifers could I give them a shot(s) that will keep them from getting pregnant until I grain finish without compromising the natural beef aspect...

What would you do about the heifers?

I sell freezer beef. Half my calves this year were heifers. I sold all but one because I culled their moms with them and have one heifer left. The same day they sold we bought back replacement bulls, to steer ,at the stockyard. I don't like to do this because I hate to open my herd and plus...

    20 cow herd- not settling

I second Grannysoo. I would also incourage him to call a vet out to go over there history, pastures, vaccs, etc. Then I would test asap for whatever I had to to figure this mystery out. You could have very well total botched your biosecurity with you buying his feeder cattle and putting them...

    20 cow herd- not settling

I know Lepto has more than one strain and you have to consider that when picking out a vaccine. We also vaccinate for Lepto twice a year because they can be re-exposted by free roaming deer. Had a friend who raises reg.Show Angus that had the whole herd plus several horses get Lepto via deer...

    20 cow herd- not settling

Did he have all three bulls tested? If so are they tested before you put them on your place or after they have been their awhile? Are you feeding any Whole Cottonseed?

    Freemartins

I plan on blood testing this heifer in September and find out for sure.

    Freemartins

mnmtranching, I just wanted to answer your question. This really started with me being concerned about it. I have very few cattle, less than 20 head, and one of the young heifers I bought in November is of concern. Now, I was counting on her to calve next year to met the demand for the...

Condition of a young bull with cows?

Gosh, He looks good. He may have lost a little but not much. Is he yours? The reason I ask is that I have heard that some push the grain when they are young for awhile knowing they will go in with the girls. I am really asking the question in general because I purchased a young bull that...

Anyone owned or have pictures of a freemartin? LOOK!

I want to second Knersie. I have said SUSPECTED freemartin. I value Knersies' opinion enough that I will have a blood test done when the vet comes to palpate in September if she is not bred. Because I run a TERMINAL operation if she not a freemartin I will continue to use her. I am lucky I...
