How do you put up produce

We have had a ton of tomatoes this year, and they look much better than last year's. I've picking some each day. The yellow squash had me baffled because it was getting mushy long before it's ready to pick and this was without watering or rain. The red potatoes we dug up seem a little too tough...

    Garden Progress?

I had a couple slices from one pulled from a friend's garden yesterday.....it was really good. then I found out that I had given him those seeds that I got out of a cantalope from our garden last year......it was very tasty. I'm still waiting on mine to get ripe.

    Upside down tomatoes

my dad gave me mine.....I got one little tomato off of it and I don't see any more growing. My mother's has 4 or 5. I'll stick with tomatoes plants grown upright in the garden....as many tomatoes as I've picked I figure I will be eating them way into October....with each meal.

    Upside down tomatoes

Jo, Yours look very healthy and are doing well from the looks of it. I was checking mine the other day and found one tiny tomato....I don't know that it will produce more than that, but there's still hope. :D

How do you put up produce

Yes, I do. mostly I use the Roma. I freeze them to put in hot sauce, chili, spaghetti sauce, or taco soup. I place them in a boiling pot of water for about a minute, then I put them in ice water to get the skin to peel off easy. Seal them in a bag then into the freezer.

    Upside down tomatoes

All mine has been doing is turning up towards the sun and turning yellow on the ends. The only bloom it had turned brown and fell off. :???:

How do you put up produce

I use a vacuum sealer also....I even vacuum seal bulk food items I buy at the grocery stores, and left overs. Sealing is great for foods that are not so sticky....like squash or okra. I try to layer the squash and do what I can with the okra. I coat them with a flour mixture and then...

    oooooh~I'm sooo mad

that's odd....my parents had one to do the same exact thing, just die. I have one in an upside down container that is doing fine. My other plants which are not BB seem to be doing okay. I've got those 3 plants in buckets away from rabbits. :?

    Upside down tomatoes

Mine is just growing, no blooms on it not even the beginning of a bloom noticeable. The strong winds and heavy rains we got early this morning broke two of my tomato plants that were growing in 5 gallon buckets. They were doing so good too, blooms and all. That's 6 plants I've lost so...

    Hummingbirds--a suggestion for you

So far, I have to refill once a week mostly because the wind blows and causes the sugar water to spill out when the feeders are swaying back and forth. drunk hummingbirds....that would be a bad thing, and possibly get an eye poked out. :D

    Upside down tomatoes

My dad gave it to me a few days ago and wanted me to try it. He put a plant that will probably produce good size tomatoes, maybe a little too big for hanging upside down. The plant is trying to grow towards the the sun, so I think that most of the tomatoes will probably end up falling off or...

    Hummingbirds--a suggestion for you

I just realized I should have posted this somewhere else....sorry about. hilldowns, How often do you have to change the water in those feeders? Mid-winter I'm thinking about getting out the feeders and getting them ready, or looking for new types of feeders. I would love to have that...

    Hummingbirds--a suggestion for you

I had two Hummingbirds show almost 2 weeks ago, one female, one male. I've been waiting for them since last part of March. I have several feeders out in about my garden here and there, and one on my office window that they really seem to enjoy. The one on the window also lets me see them up...

    Bacon grease/Lard/Shortening

Same here. I have two grease jars each with built in strainer....one for cooking oil and the other for bacon grease. I remove the strainer when pouring bacon grease in the jar. Fried eggs alone are not any good at all unless cooked in bacon grease.

    Finally Started

The last freeze got my tomatoes, yellow squash, and a few other things. Onions seem to be fine, a little small but I planted those late. Everything else is okay....nothing to brag about. Rabbits are being a real pain this year.

    Starting seeds

You can use egg shells and the cartons they come in. Of course, it might take you some time to get that many shells to start 400 plants. Take a look at the link....hope it helps. http://www.pallensmith.com/index.php?op ... &Itemid=98
