What is it worth to mow and rake?

Figure it by the acre to cut and rake, then take your share of hay at the $25 a bale. That way you shouldn't lose either way.Unless the tonnage isn't there.

It is better to buy hay?

Reading this thread makes one wonder why some are in the cattle and hay business. If you're not doing it because you love doing it, just go punch a clock and make that mans money for him. If you're doing something you love doing and you pay your bills, what better life is there. Weather you buy...

To cut or not to cut.

To cut or not cut. It's a toss up. With the weather we've been getting here, it'll never dry enough for baling. The last hay I cut, (1st this year) it took a week to get it dry enough to burn. I don't care to bale hay that has been laying on the ground for 10 to 12 days.

    Hay Season 2013

Rain today. Rolled hay on the 9th and got it in the barn today, and it started raining with 5 rolls left on the trailer. But it's all under cover now. We haven't had a 4-5 day window sense the 9th.

    Fencing Livestock

Agree with the last two post above. About 8" off ground and a really hot charger. Must train hogs for fence. When I had a hog operation, after weaning sows and breed them. I would put them in pasture for more space for a while. When they were learning what a hot wire was, they'd hit it with...

    Mowing Hay

Snow here is rare. We'll see flakes coming down at times, but as far as it sticking on the ground is seldom seen.

    Mowing Hay

Yep, I've read where the sugar and all the good stuff is up in the afternoon or something. I wait till 1 or 2 to start cutting. Get the sweeter stuff. Anybody ever took a bite of morning grass and then an evening bite to see if it taste sweeter. skyhigh, think that's a taste test you should do...

goats and cattle in the same pasture

You need a fence that will hold water to keep a goat in. They do always seem to prefer the other side of the fence. Maybe if you started them on the outside, they would break in and stay inside, thinking their not supposed to be there. Just writing this got me smelling goat.

    Hay Season 2013

I agree with Angus. You can put something in the shop, and get it back and break down in the field. Just cause it's been through the shop at $100 an hour doesn't mean it's all done. I went through my baler. I missed 1 bearing. I fixed it, baled my hay. Didn't cost $100 hr. Paying someone that...

    Hay Season 2013

I did. Go through it that is. That bearing is the minor problem, that's fixed and rolled hay. The tractor is the bigger problem. Sky, That grass looks good. You still getting rain? We're suppose to be getting rain for the next 3 days. Needed sunshine through the weekend to get all I wanted done.

    Hay Season 2013

Hay Season 2013 off to a good start. Make hay while the sun shines, but ya gotta fix the break downs while you should be baling. Hyd coupling came loose some how and hit the fan, bent the blades, and the fan blades tore up the radiator. That was at the start of baling. Hooked up the 504 baler to...

    Hay Season 2013

Guess we just got blessed to get 7 days of sun. The worst part about cutting hay is hooking to the disc cutter. Would love to get a caddy, and see how that works.
