Backyard grassers must have come to the sale.

60-80% of braking is front tires.... And fronts act sooner. Not uncommon to wear 2 sets of front pads for every set of rears.

Correct larger brakes necessitated 17" wheels. Guys may have been mad about that until they found out a new 1/2 ton will legally tow what their old 3/4 would or more. Or they hooked 25k lbs of hay behind their 3/4 ton and felt confident they could stop it.

They have increased the size of the brakes because they have increased the towing capacity from 10k lbs in 2000 to 22k lbs in 2024.

Aluminized pipe was invented in the early 1900s I believe. It was used in the 60s-90s.

Um you do know that combustion results in water vapor being produced correct? They have a drain hole because they figured out if they drain some of the condensation out the exhaust will last 200k+ miles. Go back to the 70s and 5 exhaust systems would have rusted out from the inside, if the...

Give me disc brakes any day of the week. I wouldn't own a drum brake on anything anymore. Actually modern cars have higher exhaust temps due to better fuel control and running leaner. Lean builds heat which gives better mpg, more complete combustion, less emissions. My dd has has over 200k...

Up north things still rust away. If you daily drive it all winter around here it'll be rusty in 3-5 years.

Is the lasagna noodle horn genetic? All his other pi$$ poor traits I can deal with, but lasagna noodle horns is a deal breaker.

    Headed to the sale barn

I have fenced grass with water available that wouldnt otherwise be used so i can add ~300lbs for very little investment. If a guy was stocked with cows to capitalized on our abundant May thru August grass he would then be scrambling for pasture by October.

Currently here a weaned 500lb will bring around $1800, bring in that trailer weaned 500lb and watch it bring less than $1500. 800lb will bring close to $2300.

Trailer weaning cattle is a money loser at the markets available to us. I've done it both ways and trailer weaned 5wts bring .40-.60 less than weaned calves. Personally I have more summer grass than my cows can graze so feeding steers to 8wt on over abundant "cheap" grass brings a good return...

    Feeder futures

I won't own any animal cow, bull, horse, etc that won't respect a fence. Life's to short to deal with that headache.

350 miles away and always sell for much less than Iowa.

    After weaning

Depends on what sells in your local market. Where I ship in Iowa 500lb steers brought 357. 800lb steers brought 271. 500×3.57=1785. 800×2.71=2168. So for me I'll feed them cheap grass and make that extra $383 per head.

Get a pot load together and the trucking ain't too bad. Selling weaned calves is easy because you can plan the loads ahead of time. Like I know me and the neighbor will have a load of 8wts in the fall. The bummer is I have to hold cull cows often times 3 to 6 months before we all get enough...

It started because the LP of Michigan had TB in the cattle herd. So Wisconsin treated the whole state as one unit (even though the UP is separated by 4 miles of water) and said no cattle from Michigan as we had TB even though the UP never has a cow test positive. That rule has since changed...

    Headed to the sale barn

My calves have to leave Michigan and pass thru Wisconsin and sell in Iowa or Minnesota. Michigan cattle can't be sold or even lay-over in Wisconsin. So its a long haul for them. Closest auction within the state of Michigan is 350 miles from my house, and cattle there routinely sell for 60% of...

My calves leave my house on a Monday morning and don't sell until Wednesday afternoon. 420+ miles on the truck. I usually see between 5-8% shrink on 6wts that have been weaned 90+ days.
