    Slaughter cows and bulls.

Tuesday night April 2nd will be the bred special for the month. They have had decent to big runs of breds all winter long and the packers have held the floor so high that they are buying a pretty big % of the sales. Those of us that are in the business understand it, but its a little...

    Slaughter cows and bulls.

Fairview IL had a $1.68 bull top and a $1.75 cow top Tuesday. As long as we keep killing the factories this fdr market will stay strong.

    Headed to the sale barn

The flip side of that is that with such high prices buyers are looking even harder for an excuse to discount cattle. The calves that are shrank out the most will sought after more. Not saying they will bring the most gross dollars but they should.

    Why so popular?

You’re not wrong. They have to be sound. This time of year my mailbox is bombarded with angus sale catalogs. I can look at hundreds of bulls on paper before I ever go see one in person. For our part of the country the place I used to manage had a pretty good size cow herd. We kept between...

    Why so popular?

I’ve seen better phenotypical bulls and worse. Some people chase a specific trait like carcass or growth. When their progeny is hanging on the rail it doesn’t really matter how pretty they were alive. Not necessarily my thing but some people get very hung up on the numbers

Who is he? What does he look like on paper?

Mandatory EID tags for KY cattle

This is no different than brucellosis Testing and tagging. Except it’s all animals being sold. You don’t think that the back tag that gets glued to the market cow that you sell is attached to your name and address? Of course it is. For several reasons. It’s a way to track zoonotic diseases...

Mandatory EID tags for KY cattle

The packers feel that everything is privileged info and the producers don’t qualify. It’s getting better. We always sell fed cattle live. Or old buyers would complain when we were getting to many yg4 but would not tell us what the load did or if they were strs or hfs that were to fat. Because...

    Bad eye

You sold the skunk tail as bred and they still weighed her up? Even when the packers buy bred cows here they buy them by the head unless there’s something wrong with the cow; bad limp, checked open , bat $hit crazy in the ring, Ect

    Bred cow sale tomorrow

Cool tee shirts. I watched a sale in Montana last week . I thought bred cows were pretty soft. Basically $1/ pound plus $250 for the calf that they were carrying.

Mandatory EID tags for KY cattle

I’m not sure any state had mandatory BANGs vaccinating unless they were out of state hfrs coming in. Lots of producers still BANGs there hfrs just so they can travel anywhere when they are sold. It used to be a selling point; Everything has been done to them that could be done. Real reputation...

    Lightweights bust thru 4 bucks!

The report says only $3,850, but I could swear I heard $3,950 on some of those Simmentals.

    Lightweights bust thru 4 bucks!

This is starting to get a little out of hand. Fairview, IL had fancy bred hfrs today up to $3,950

Mandatory EID tags for KY cattle

It sounds like animals only need to be tagged when they leave the farm. If you precondition feeder cattle it’s pretty easy to tag them when they’re in the chute. Nobody will have a hard and fast inventory of your herd. As far as breeding stock goes the E-id’s are just replacing the usda steel...

Mandatory EID tags for KY cattle

I’ve seen enough infected ears from the old USDA steel tags that I see your concern about the tags being on top of the ear. We tagged sale bulls last win the middle rib but closer to the head. We didn’t want to cover up their tattoos.

Mandatory EID tags for KY cattle

Besides the fact that they want you to tag feeder cattle. It’s not much different than the old steel tags that we put in all breeding age cattle returning to the country. If it’s like the sheep tags maybe the state will give them to producers if you put them in on the farm.

Mandatory EID tags for KY cattle

He says he’s worried about the extra cost to producers, but really it’s the barns that are going to take it on the chin. They are going to have to invest in readers and technology to pass along information. The tags are $3-4 and go in just as easy as a normal ear tag.

    Hot Mic

I was listening to a feeder sale on LMA this morning. I had my phone in my bibs while I was working. They ran in a set strs in , started the standard spiel; shots weaned, bla bla. Started selling, got a bid and the price started climbing. Then the auctioneer stopped. He said “ they think there’s...

    Where NOT to buy cattle...

If it’s the right cow that we can flush and make some good bulls out of then I can see spending the same amount of money on a cow that we would on a good bull.

    Where NOT to buy cattle...

Oh I think it’s the dumbest thing ever. But some people have the money and want that purple ribbon and banner at whatever the price.
