    Sell or Hold'em

I would agree with you based on the average consumer, many will switch to pork or poultry as less expensive alternatives. But let's not forget about the world's elite that have plenty of money, they will spend $250-300 per person or more on a steak dinner at a fancy restaurant. Certain markets...

    Sold 4 yesterday.

What I sold this year has been a mixture of cull cows and calves. I took them in on the morning of the sale to minimize yardage and feed expenses, etc. The per head total costs came out between $32 and $35. This was at two different sale barns, the most recent load didn't have any cows, all...

Sold three head in West, Texas on 7/13/2023 (Results)

@Lucky I'm farther west and don't get the rainfall that you do, my stocking rates are 10-12 acres for a cow/calf pair in a good year. Last year and this year have been drier than usual so it's taking 15-18 acres for a pair, and I will still need to purchase hay for the winter. I try to calve...

    Sold 4 yesterday.

Interesting to me to compare the deductions from the check with what I pay in my part of the country. You had a total of $218.40 divided by four, or $54.60 per head in deductions. That's more than what I normally pay. Is that the normal amount for KY, TN, VA, NC areas?

Sold three head in West, Texas on 7/13/2023 (Results)

@Lucky I have native grass pastures that are nothing special. In the hot summer, like now, the grass burns up and goes dormant, young, weaned cattle will not gain on it without supplementation to meet their protein needs. Two lbs. of 20% range cubes per head, per day, will keep them gaining...

Sold three head in West, Texas on 7/13/2023 (Results)

@TexasRancher if a steer is 17 months old and only weighs 780 lbs. then there's either a breed/genetics problem, a health problem or a nutritional problem that you need to correct. It should weigh 780 lbs. long before it reaches 17 months of age.

    Market reports

Some barns are worse about it than others, but I think they're trying to show a rosy market picture to entice others to bring their cattle in to sell at their salebarn

Feeder Cattle Pricing 2014 vs. 2023

In 2014 I sold steers that weighed 663 lbs avg. for $2.40 This week I sold steers that weighed 668 lbs avg. for $2.04 The difference is that costs for all inputs are much higher now than they were in 2014, feed, fuel, herbicides... Do you feel the squeeze? How long before we're raising a...

    An exercise for all

I think to make that calculation we would need to know what your feed costs are per head per day and what are your costs once you can stop feeding and turn them out on grass. Some people forget that it still costs money for the grass, maybe there's a lease cost or fertilizing, weed spraying...

    Price Cycle Some Day ?

Well, if Mexico goes through with the ban on GMO corn, then it can have a negative price impact. It may free up corn to be used in the US as livestock feed, but I don't know if it would get down in that $3-4 range. If it did there could be a lot of bankruptcies in corn country.

    Making money in cattle!

OPM is a drug that people get addicted to, the money dealers want to get you hooked on it to the point that they own you and you become the equivalent of a modern day slave.. If the venture doesn’t make good enough sense to use your own money then it’s probably not worth doing.

    What to do?

Food items are one of the main things the government tracks and uses to calculate inflation. They have the system rigged to keep the inflation numbers as low as possible. Many of the farm programs are what I would call a back-end rebate, they pay you pandemic money, subsidies, etc. on the...

    Cattle futures

I predict that we'll have a couple of years of really good prices before they start trending downward, the big question is how much will input costs go up during that same time period.

Anyone care to give opinions of bulls in this sale??

@ClinchValley86 thanks for the information, it won't help me, but I have a friend that moved to TN and may not be aware of the program.

Anyone care to give opinions of bulls in this sale??

I notice that some of the bulls are advertised as qualifying for a KY and TN cost share. What are the details of this cost sharing program? We don’t have anything like that program here
