    Canning Beef

My family canned meat before my home town put in a locker plant. They used jars, mason lids (two piece), large pots w/lids (they called canners). A 6-700 lb calf was usually a two day process. When the jars were cool and lids checked for proper tightness the finished product was transported to...

    Pasturing corn stalk ground

As always what goes around comes around. Many years ago, before combinding corn & baleing corn stocks was in, all farmers/corn growers in NE Nebraska grazed the corn stocks. After several inches to over a foot of snow there was nothing else other than Hay. When it was still popular to "pick corn...

    Building a Silage Pit

My Dad had a earthen pit dug into a hill side. The only plastic sheeting he used was to cover the contents when finished. One of things that made this pit sucessful was he would drive a tractor over the contents, packing it much tighter especially on the edges than some of the more modern pits...

My brother is in the banking business and according to him they donot require branding. However, they are in favor of EID tags at least for cattle that are in feed lots. Traveling Sprinkler System

Several of our neighbors have a hose & reel system. They each had large wells drilled and pvc piping installed from the well with numerous hook-ups for the hose & reel system (don't know the cost of the installation). Last year they had hay on these fields where the rest of us did not. One...
