    Cow-Calf profit for newbie!

Do I could definitely make money in that situation but I have lots of ag experience. I would divide the place to rotational grazing and get help with deciding what different for ages to grow. South Carolina you can grow something all year long in pastures if you manage it well. You will need to...

    Cows in 2 horse trailer?

I have a trailer we had made to haul snare with a foal. It looks like a 2 horse trailer but is really a stock trailer. It is a bumper pull. 10ft from hitch to back. Low to the ground and 7ft high inside. Everything loads great in it. We haul everything in it. We like to pack it. A couple months...

Best way to load wild cattle

I like to take the path of least resistance. I would park the trailer in the pen. Put the feed in the trailer. This would be the only feed in the pen. Have a couple of others with the wild one. Each day, go put feed in and rattle the trailer. When they are eating, rattle it more. The day you...

    Showing steers

Get cattle cubes. Use them like dog treats. Hold them high and when he takes a few steps, let him have it. When he does what you want, cube him. We raise lots of calves for show and this is how we get them walking . All of our cows get halter broke even if not show cows. They are food...

Dealing with a very fearful calf

I raise lots of bottle calves. Some I buy at a salebarn. I like to get calves split off old cows. 2 years ago I bought a tiny simangus heifer. I usually take them home in the back of my suv but I had delivered a bull I sold and only stopped at the salebarn as I was driving right passed it on my...

Scurs or Horns...on 4 month old

Those look like horns. Why not take her to the vet and have her dehorned? It would cost under $20 and then you wouldn't have horns. If you dont want horns get a homozygous polled bull and all calves will be polled.

Bottle fed calf timeline and targets and growing them

Not knowing what breeds, and type of cattle and location it is hard to give target weights as even with Angus there is a big size difference in northern compared to southern Angus. I've raised lots of bottle calves. I have many different breeds. They are all over the place birth weights and the...

Bottle fed calf timeline and targets and growing them

I dont know what your feeding program is but bottle calves need lots of grain and for a long time. If you feed them enough they wont be small or stunted unless sick like PI bvd. I find adding alfalfa to the hay pile helps them grow too.

Breed at year old or wait till 2

You must have bigger cattle than I have. Some of my 2 year olds dont weigh 900. I do breed at 15 months unless really small. One of my most productive cows is a Jersey cross dairy that only weighs 800. She will be 4 in march and should calve for the third time in March. plus the first 2 years...

    Any advice

Farmerjan gave you a lot of good advice. But I will disagree about sourcing calves. I've never lost a salebarn bottle calf but I have lost farm buy calves. No one at the salebarn is lying to you. You get what you see. I prefer to buy calves split off cows. I get to see the mom. I have an idea...

    Feeding in winter question

Unless you had a lot of stockpiled grass, I dont see how your cows and calves are not starving. You said you have 13 cows, 11 calves, one bull on 25 plus 20 acres that were grazed during the growing season. So for at least 100 days no more regrowth. I would think the grass would be gone. Go buy...

    Moving cows to new farm

I sold a very gentle bull to a man in August. 3 weeks ago he moved him to a new pasture. The bull disappeared. They guess he jumped the fence. I guess he wasn't happy being moved. I hope they find him. He is a rare find as he is extremely docile but fertile and likes to work.

Buying a small farm to run cattle

Without knowing where you are located, what the weather, water, pasture, market, ect in your area is it is impossible to answer your question. Also, if you have no cattle experience, your chances of not losing money are pretty slim. There is a learning curve to cattle that can be pretty...

    Culling

I had a beef shorthorn bull. He got an infection end of june 2017. Took to vet. Given nuflor, banamine, la200. Repeated 3 days later. End of August got a heifer that had been with him preg checked by same vet. Called open. October 1st blood test preg checked heifer. Pregnant. We thought the...

    Any advice

What is your bottle calf plan? What kind do you plan to buy? Feed for how long? Sell where? Do you have a good vet relationship? Lots of good meds on hand? Do you know how to use the meds? Esophageal feeder? Raising bottle calves can be tough. I raise lots. You need to only get calves you...

    Breaking Donkey's

I think that is a recipe for disaster. It just isn't hard to halter break a calf by tying them, brushing them, leading them with cattle cubes for encouragement. All of my cattle are halter broke. 22 of them now but we have halter broke every calf we raised and only didnt halter break an old cow...

I'm new to the sale barn business. Is this the right job for me?

Look up Temple Grandin cattle handling videos. Like others have said, dont get aggressive with already scared animals or you will regret it. I've seen great handlers at the salebarn that make it look so easy. They are never in a hurry and act like a leader so the cattle aren't scared further but...

    Cow calf to buying calves?

Sounds like you dont think you have any cattle worth keeping so you should just sell them all. You should have done this 2 months ago as you would have gotten more for them. If you go that route but 400 weight calves and feed them. They will be pricey in the spring. If you have any hay, you...
