    Today's Adventure

Nice save! That calf was meant to live with the way that timing worked out for you to be there. A few minutes difference, and you would have never known what happened to it. Sounds like a heck of a day for you. Hope he takes you out for supper after your river and cow fighting adventure.

    I see train wreck coming

I'm glad to hear that they are doing ok so far, and he is coming by to check on them. That doesn’t sound like many feeders for the number he is feeding, but I guess if they have some stockpile to eat as well they aren’t all piling in at once, maybe. I bet it was really expensive, but I'm glad he...

    Warming up

That would sure give somebody a big lick on the head if they were under it when it fell off. Weather has been nasty here the last few days with snow, ice, and wind. Nothing like y’all get, but I sure don’t like it. Supposed to get down to -3 tomorrow, then back up around 65 and rainy by the end...

    Boer goats

Yep. Had some really nice goats and Limousin cattle if I remember correctly.

    Looking for suggestions on calves

Those look like nice calves to me. Based off of those pictures without any other information, I wouldn’t change anything. Just make sure you keep a good bull with your cows. Those calves would bring the top of the market in my area.

17 month old heifer delivers healthy calf

Good deal. You couldn’t have asked for a better outcome from that situation. You’ll just need to give her a little TSC to help her along if you can since she’s using so much fuel feeding the calf and her still with a lot of growing to do herself.

    When to put out hay

That worked out great for both of y’all. Lots of folks around here are looking for some hay before it all gets gone.

    When to put out hay

I’m in a different part of the state from you, but most of the hay I’m seeing advertised is around $40-$45 for 4x5s. Most small squares are $6-$8. Some advertised for a little less, and some a little more. It’s been pretty dry up my way the last little bit and many haven’t fertilized as much or...

    Beginer advice

Welcome! They can be adaptable, but I don’t think that would be the ideal climate for them. What would be your plans with them? Im not sure if there would be a very strong market for them in your area. Any specific reason you are looking at red Brangus?

    Record keeping-apps or program

I use Cattlemax. It’s handy to have it on my phone and the reporting features are nice too.

    Wild Cherry Trees

If they are all completely brown and not in the wilting phase, you should be ok. If there are even just a few left that are wilting I would fence around them.

    A little gather.

Beautiful country there with the mountains in the background. Cattle and horses lookin good. Always nice to find a new little one like that. Sounds like a good day.

    Buying bulls

Sorry to hear that. That’s a rough day. When it rains it pours sometimes. Hopefully the bad is out of the way now, and better days ahead.

    Beef steers

Thanks. She’s bout like a longhorn waiting to calve, you never know what it will look like til it pops out. I’d rather not have calves with the extra white markings, but she’s an old sentimental favorite, and still raises a big calf every year, so she gets to stay. Here some of the different...

    Beef steers

Genetics and color patterns can be interesting sometimes. This steer is out of a Simangus cow and a Simangus bull. His dam has quite a bit of chrome, and was one I raised out of an old style brown and white Simmental cow. Her calves over the years have varied from solid black to mottle faced to...

Home, Sweet Home and a few cows.

Pretty countryside. Cows look happy at feeding time. That is a long line/wall of cows!

    Calf just born, hasn’t nursed

That’s a beautiful sight. You will sleep much better tonight!

Had a round with a bull today.

I’m glad that ended the way it did without you getting hurt. That could have been bad. He might not bluff next time. If he’s already been known to be unpredictable, then that would be strike 3 for him in my book. Not worth the risk. Enough other bad things can happen around the farm without...

    Horns???

Are they horns or scurs? If they are loose when you try to move them around, they are scurs. Scurs usually won’t amount to much and aren’t a problem. If they are horns, I would expect them to keep growing out similar to a Holstein’s. They probably wouldn’t get real long, but could still gouge...

Safe to buy feeders at auction?

There are no guarantees, but I’d say most of the calves at the feeder calf sale will be from local producers and preconditioned and graded, so there should be less chance of bringing sickness in than from the regular weekly sale. Even if you don’t buy any at the sale you might be able to make...
