Good year to buy bulls if you need them.

Bull sales, while down noticeably have held together better than I thought they might. So far this Winter/Spring, I've bought 23 bulls, we have about 13 yet to buy before we have our needs buttoned up for the Spring calving 1/2 of our cowherd. 11 of the bulls so far have been Hereford. Our...

    Cull or Not to Cull

I'd send her, and I wouldn't put a seasons worth of inputs into her first. The only job a cow has is to breed, calve and bring a live calf to the weaning pens, every year. Cows that don't do that, every year, have not held up their end of the bargain and need to look for employment elsewhere.

    Current Bull Pricing

I'll check the catalogue out, always good to window shop lots of different operations' bulls. We are new to Balancers (a couple years) but have jumped in with both feet as it were and are quite happy with their performance in the position we ask them to fill. I buy quite a few feeders (bought a...

    Char color(s) ?

I love what Charolais bulls do on very common poor framed cows like longhorns. The proof is in the pudding, a huge push was made to infuse lots and lots of Charolais bulls into the Mexican cowherd in the 70's and 80's. The typical Mexican prior to that basically looked like a roping steer. The...

    Current Bull Pricing

For our California ranch this Fall we bought: 35 Angus bulls for a $4,500 average 16 Horned Hereford bulls for a $4,250 average 16 Balancer bulls for a $4,100 average Will need a similar number of bulls in the Spring for the Nevada operation, I anticipate costs being similar although the...

    Balancer Bull

We have been buying some Balancer Bulls too. First calves started hitting the ground about 30 days ago and I'm impressed.

    Hereford Fall Calvers

You've got awful nice looking running age Hereford cows. Thanks for sharing. I'm a fan of Herefords. We've been very happily using Hereford bulls as one of the three breeds of bulls in our 3 breed rotation for a lot of years now and Herefords in some fashion (including exclusively for a while)...

    Some of our heifers.

You've bred up some very nice heifers.

    Selection criteria

Of course. Cows need to look like cows and bulls need to look like bulls.

    Braunvieh or Saler

I'd go Saler. Haven't had a ton of experience with either but I haven't had very good results with Braunvieh in a couple segments of our business. I do buy a decent sized string or two of Saler calves every year and have gotten along pretty good with them.

    Bred heifers

Bred cows and heifers in California at some of the bred stock sales the last couple weeks for the front end is $2,200 or so on the cows and $2,000 on the heifers.

Bos indicus breeds at the 2016 Ekka

They were indeed. Visited several of their stations in 2002 and again in 2009.

Bos indicus breeds at the 2016 Ekka

For my money, the best Gerts I've ever seen in person, including being in Kingsville, were on a couple stations smack in the middle of Australia.

Online Auction: What do you think?

Not a fan. I buy often and from time to time sell on internet auctions but they run in the same live auction format we all know and love.
