Just when you think you have seen it all (caution graphic photos)

Thanks so much for posting his reply. My wife who has worked OB/GYN reminded me that she told me that is what occurred. I ought to learn to listen, but then again why start now.

Just when you think you have seen it all (caution graphic photos)

I had the same thing happen in February of 2015. It is not common but the weaker fetus dies for an unknown reason, maybe lack of nutrients?

    Price for ET implantation

Well said. The value of the end product is very important and with cattle values on the decline it will make the numbers even harder to justify.

    Price for ET implantation

What I was referring to was based on the animals that "unintentionally" leave the herd. This is due to death, cows that are culled prematurely due to injury or illness (which is an unexpected loss), or any other reason. Don't forget about the ice storm a couple of years ago in the upper midwest...

    Price for ET implantation

I agree, experience and time make you a believer that a 10% loss rate ends up being the norm.

    Price for ET implantation

To me that would be affordable as I am looking at doing 10 or so at a time.

    Price for ET implantation

I would be using my cows and since the nearest vet that does it is 75 miles away he probably wants them at his place.

    Price for ET implantation

I am thinking about purchasing some embryos and having them implanted into my cows. The cost on the embryos would be between $400 - $500. I have no idea what to expect the cost to be for the implantation, does anyone have an idea?

    Factors Affecting Pregnancy

Very informative article. I am considering doing some ET implants this year. A fellow cattleman who collected embryos a few years ago has them sitting in his tank and never did anything with them. It would be a good way for me to increase my fullblood Gelbvieh numbers.

I believe the Pregscan ultrasound is worth having

Finally got a chance to get back on. When I did the pregnancy check I took a blood sample because I was also skepticle in my use of the machine and its accurcy I received the results back and she was pregnant. I do want to emphasize that the machine does take time to learn to use. In the future...

I believe the Pregscan ultrasound is worth having

It sends a signal and it strikes the mass. It took time to learn proper position and setting of the sensitivity. I had to learn the machine.

I believe the Pregscan ultrasound is worth having

I had been thinking about getting an ultrasound for several years but couldn't pull the trigger and just buy one. My wife and son bought the Pregscan for my Christmas gift and I have used it on about 15 head so far. I pretty much AI everything except I had a bull run with 7 cows for a short...

    Calving with so much rain?

How in the world are you cattlemen able to cope with calving and newborns in the South with so much water?

Worst start to calving I've had.

GB have things turned around? We're all hoping to hear how good its going.

    Thankful for good neighbors

Up and both are healthy. The Heifer is coming to her milk so all will be well. Thanks.

    Buying vs retaining heifers

That sounds like a great facility. I believe that if you purchase heifers from a breeder that is actually crossbreeding for heifers which sometimes you end up doing when you are crossbreeding then you can't go wrong.

    Buying vs retaining heifers

In my experience buying a herd is expensive in that you buy the good with the bad. Open heifers take some time. Bred heifers are the quickest way and you also get the better genetics. Downside to bred heifers is that you need to be there to assist in calving. If you can call someone to help buy...

    Calving seaon 2016 for me

When I was a teenager I ran Dad's dairy and we milked about 250 cows plus the ones that were dry. I knew everyone by their udder. Now that I think back that wasn't such a boring life.

    Thankful for good neighbors

Most of the time we complain about neighbors. This morning got a call from a neighbor that spotted a heifer calving by the road. We were planning on getting her up today as she had no udder but was due. We pulled the calf in the field and she would have nothing to do with it. The tongue and head...

Worst start to calving I've had.

I went for years without hardly an incident, last year was my year for the law of averages. When someone talks about not ever having any problems if just shows their inexperience. In life it just happens. I just look everyday for things to correct that may go wrong.
