    Mean Girls?

I just went through something similar except it was the calf’s momma being mean. She’s a first calf heifer and was the first one of the herd to calve. I was glad I went out to check on her when I did. She head butted the calf and wouldn’t let it get up and bellowed at it very loud and mean...

    Contracture

We've attributed her weakness to not nursing when born but the more you guys educate me the more I agree that there was definitely something more going on than just contracted tendons before she hit the ground. My friend noticed poop in her mouth and we thought it was just from being calved in...

    Contracture

We have only 10 cows. I know all you bigger producers pelvic measure but we've never had a problem and considering her pedigree didn't consider it. We may have to rethink this. An ounce of prevention is worth more than a dead calf or cow.

    Angry first time momma

She's out of a cow with real good mothering skills and a well-known bull revered for his daughters but I guess it could still be genetic. Or she could just have a screw loose. If we decide to keep her and she does it again she'll be gone.

    Angry first time momma

Well, how about that. The behavior actually has a name other than "b!tch." I googled it too and found nothing. But glad to know she's not the only one. Though it was emotionally exhausting so I hope no one else has to go through it.

    Angry first time momma

It certainly would. Not sure I want to though. Really like her phenotype and she's out of a nice, reliable cow. Plus she's easy to work even with her calf at her side.

    Angry first time momma

Since she is now a great momma could I chalk it up to her being a first-calf heifer and take a chance next breeding?

This is the experience I'm hoping for. Glad to hear it's possible.

Sure could have used Rompun! Think I might get some but hope I never have to use it. Thanks for the suggestion

    Contracture

Update- The calf didn't improve at all and stopped sucking. The vet came out yesterday and found the calf had aspirated fluid and got pneumonia. Gave electrolytes, dex, sodium bicarb, a shot of antibiotics and tube fed but wasn't hopeful. Nothing helped and our friends decided to put her down...

    Contracture

Thought about splints but wanted to wait to see if she got stronger to even stand. Thanks for the detailed procedure..

    Contracture

Heifer is fully vaccinated, in good condition with good quality hay and nutrients. We breed to low birthweight good CE bulls for heifers. Better to have live, healthy mommas and calves rather than risk any problems. It's worked so far. The calves from the other heifers were about 65-70lbs and...

    Angry first time momma

Had a first time heifer calve late one evening. Good thing I went to check on her because I found her mad as h3ll and pushing that calf around with her head. Luckily she wasn't stepping on it but, man, she was angry at it! A really amazing thing was watching the other cows chasing her off to...

    Contracture

Had a heifer calf born last night at our friends place. It was an hour before they found her. Mom was licking it but it couldn't get up so hadn't nursed at all. Luckily momma cow is fairly gentle and they were able to work with the calf trying to get it to stand but no luck. It was pretty...

    So tiny! Why?

The dam is 11 yrs old. She’s been a really good cow but hasn’t been in good health for a few months. We’re very happy (and surprised) the little one is healthy as can be. Momma is milking good and Minnie is growing fast.

    So tiny! Why?

Oh My Gawd there’s something in the air! I just had a tiny heifer born last week. Mom decided to calve in the 10ft wide strip of pasture where water sits after irrigating. Glad I happen to be out there. I scooped her up and carried the tiny thing across pasture to drier ground. Couldn’t have...
