    Young heifer bred

We started giving Lute shots to all heifers, just incase. Even with that, this year we had two calve at 16-17 months. Both had no issues, were good mothers, and have been cycling again. If your vet thinks she has room and is big enough, leave her be.

    Composure

Where are you from? Most of our Galloway X Angus cross have slicked pretty well here in ND. Our full bloods haven't completely shed out yet, but all have already rebred.

    contracted tendons?

straighten the joint and wrap the joint with vet wrap. A couple days later take the wrap off.

    Collecting on an older bull

As was stated, if he is still able to breed cows naturally, there should be absolutely no reason you can't collect them. If the bull is unable to mount a cow, then electro-jaculation is the only way to collect. Some old bulls do not respond to this method. I have never herd of collection...

    Calving 2013

I know I find out how good of shape I am NOT in when I make a few laps on one that insists her calf is where she had it. Do you hog tie the calf to keep them from escaping the sled? My wife fashioned a cargo net if you will over the sled, to keep the calf pinned down. Frozen cow turds, ruts...

    Calving 2013

Oh so familiar. My wife is usually the one pulling the sled. :D Glad she follwed you up. It isn't fun trying to make a determined momma go the other direction at night, in the snow. :bang: Good work.

    CIDRS...Yes or No

If your cows are cycling, you will get a better grouping. Just giving the shot, you will miss some that have cycled too close to time of injection. They will be non responders, and you will catch them with the second shot. We have had good luck with non cycling cows, short post calving cows...

how do you catch and weigh your calves

We usually weigh with a spring scale and sling. We tag at the same time. We try to do this within 24hrs. We have a calf hook to snare them, if I am too slow. Wife keeps the agressive cows occupied while i am weighing / tagging. The extension portion of the calf hook does not collapse /...

    Gestation Length

We have bred the same group of cows to the same bull over the last 3 years. The first 2 years everything calved 10-14 days past due date with 75-90 lb calves. This years they are calving 10-14 days ahead of due date with 60-75 lb calves. Only one calved exactly like she has the last 2 years...

    never buying bred heifers again

Sorry for your loss. From your statements, this heifer was at it too long. If you could pull it by hand with rope and chains, it was not a "hard" birth, not easy, but fairly normal with some heifers. Heifers can be a challenge and do require a lot more watching than experienced cows.

    Semen Company Loyalty?

It wouldn't hurt to just ask him. Tell him you are interested in using bull X and can he get it, because you want to continue to do business with him.

    Bull rent/lease

I agree with this statement. we very seldom if ever rent a bull out anymore. To a good friend/customer in a bind, maybe. We used to, and then ground the bull up for burger when we got him back. don't typically have any unsold bulls left to lease out, so answer is easy.

    Club calf bulls

Only a handful of Clubby bulls are bred with any maternal abilities. The majority are bred to produce steers with a certain "look " to them. I am not saying don't do it, but producing replacement females would be last on the list. You will get some cool looking calves.

re Breeding Imported Summer Calvers from MT & ND

Depending on what type of operation they came from, you shouldn't have too much problem. There guts will need to stretch, as they are used to eating less grass (higher quality). Now if they have been dry lotted, or on irrigated pasture, they will trasition quicker.

    Bovine Elite

Same here, my wife took it a couple years later than I did. She does the heifers, and I get the cows. Only one of us has to be around during breeding, where it used to be me all the time.

    Fair enough, thanks

Young heifer, small bag, calved today

May I ask WHY? What breed do you raise?

    Tiny Little Calf

I agree with highgrit on this one. In my experience the calves that don't make much effort to live, aren't worth the hassel. Randi you did what i would have done.
