    No wonder we've been dry

This past year was a challenge. Wet spring lost calves due to mud and rain. Lost almost all of my yearlings due to botulism. Sold almost half of my cows this fall due to lack of quality hay and none available for purchase in the area. This year has to be better.

    Grazing Management Webinar!

I find myself in a situation where cull cow prices are so low that to reduce my numbers i'm forced to sell at a substantial loss. This is the first step in improving grassland production, reduce your numbers to the point that you can increase them later.

Chris Stlelzer was the name of the guy who hosted it and put "all" the information together.

    how late for k-31

Here in Southern Indiana we were in a drought up until 2 1/2 weeks ago I planted 5 acres with an old Massey 33 drill in disked soild got a great stand now about an inch tall. I'll see if it survives, it would have done no good in the bag.

    Grazing Management Webinar!

I sat last night and watched this man's webinar, You would have believed he reinvented the wheel. When it was finished I felt like he was trying to get his audience to cover his lost income while he screwed off doing internships around the world. He doesn't have anything that isn't available at...

    More on rotational grazing

Don't worry, if WOTUS does go through we won't be able to use most ponds. The NRCS has been promoting the installation of fountains for several years now.

    Crop Insurance

There have been several articles in the past months where the subsidies for crop insurance have been cut for the 2016. It is supposed to be readdressed I believe in two years. Since I don't borrow any money (banks would never loan me any) I have never purchased any. The farm programs are rather...

    Drilling seed into old hayfield

A type of fescue to check into if I'm not too late would be Meadow fescue. It has been used in Europe and this country years ago. It is being promoted once again by the Universities. Byron seed company is who I have been able to find information on it from.

    Fertilizer prices

I haven't checked on prices but I know that the amount I spend on fertilizer will be less this year. I have a lot of carryover hay and unexpected expenses. Factor in lower prices and fertilizer was the second cut. Improvements was the first cut.

    unrolling hay

The super slicer overall doesn't look all that complicated. It appears that it would be ideal for the way I like to feed. Spreading the cattle out does help with boss cows control especially when you run all ages together. My next question is how would rocks that are in the round bales fare in...

    unrolling hay

I would like to know how the super slicer would work on 2 year old bales stored outside. This past winter I have been unrolling bales with a skidsteer with forks. What I have is leftover wheat hay that was stored outside and infested with rats. I have been putting it all over the pasture and...

    Homemade core sampler

I have thought about taking a hole saw and cutting the top out of it welding it to a piece of Intermediate conduit about 3' long then insert a plunger approximately 2" long, next weld the top of the hole saw back on. To drill thread in the arbor and drill, the 3' would get to the center of a 6'...

    Too much grass

If the field is fenced then run cows on it. They will trample what they don't eat and the biomass is the best fertilizer you can apply. You may need the additional organic matter to hold moisture in the future.

    Spring pasture turnout?

I have plenty of hay and I have my cows up on just 20 acres (50 animals). I'm planning on keeping them up for another six weeks. I have went over all my other pasture the past couple of weeks and applied more seed to try and thicken the stand. I'm not sure what happened but my established stands...

Walked on Red Clover this afternoon

I use a mower conditioner and intend on grazing after the first cutting. My goal is to increase the weights on my calves. I'm hoping the legume will increase milk production even more on my Gelbviehs.

Walked on Red Clover this afternoon

I had a patch that was about 3 1/2 acres that was planted in both directions to orchardgrass last fall and have an excellent stand. I am wanting to increase my weaning weights and thought that planting red clover wouldn't be a bad idea. I know from when I used to milk you needed legumes to make...

    NEW HOLLAND 488

The New Holland 488 is still marketed. It is still our most dependable mower. I am making final repairs on our disc mower for the last time. We bought one 2 1/2 years ago for $600.00 and made about $450.00 worth of repairs such as belts, skid shoes, upgraded to case hardened sections, and an...

The temperature the rain and the birds....

The snow was finally all gone here in Southern Indiana 5 days ago. I noticed that there were a few traces of green in the yard around the house. It will be a week or more before I will be able to even broadcast any clover onto the fields. I want to try and establish the clover to increase my...

    Standing Hay Price

Just paid the fertilizer bill with application. We had good soil tests ( not terribly out of line on anything) and fertilized for 4 ton per acre and the cost was $80.00 an acre. My neighbor just bought a 4x4 baler for the simple reason people are stuck in the mindset of a per bale price. We...
