How much lower can the cull cow market go?

That was an awesome thread, one of the best reads I’ve found on here.

Buying short bred cattle... starting out.

Thanks Sky and CB, good info I’ll have to take a look at that book. Another reason is because I’m on an island surrounded by a sea of black hides. Not that it makes a hill of beans difference, but I don’t want to be another jack leg raising black just because black.

Any reason I shouldn’t start with Hereford? I know Hereford, that’s all we’ve ever had along with baldies. Theyre docile and make good milkin’ mommas. I can cross them with any mainstream breed and produce a calf that the markets want to buy. From my viewpoint they make a great foundation...

I was pleasantly surprised with the way those 8mo heifers looked. 6-7wt. Seems to be a good cross.

I’m sorry to hear that farmerjan, always tough loosing calves. I figure at $700 a head plus the buyback option I can pretty much get some decent commercial cows for free minus my input costs with at least another couple years of production. The bull is nice, his hind end sticks up a little...

Went and saw the cattle and the guys operation yesterday, as I figured the cows aren’t in the best body condition due to the current weather, a lot of soggy feet and saw some traces of pink eye. One old cow he had separated from the rest and she had the worst cancer eye I’ve seen. These...

Oh absolutely, no sale barns for me. I want to be able to go to a mans farm and see his cattle on pasture. Then make a call on purchasing. Yeah I was thinking meeting in the middle $750. 60ish cents a pound?

That's a good point, quicker roi short term as well. ive also thrown around the idea of holding off on cow calf another year or two and running summer stockers. lots of neighbors with fall born calves and no grass to graze. im sure i could get a deal on a hand full.

I thought the same thing at first but guy says they were all bred back 100% in a tight 45 day window, this years calves have already been weaned and sold. IDK i guess thats what works for him.

I wish. I make more money than he does. These cows are an investment for tomorrow not for a 1$ today. Retirement income for when I retire in 20 years and build a kickass herd in the meantime that’s the focus. Live frugal. No debt. Great off farm income and benefits x2(fiancé). Everything’s...

I’m in central NC, NE of Raleigh. There are plenty of cheap cows around but I’m just picky. I’m looking for top notch cattle. Side note: thank you for your service, I’m a fireman full time.

The sire is a beautiful registered Gert bull. He’s asking 900$ OBO for the bred cows. He also has a registered herf bull he’d...
