What do you feed with Distiller's Grains?

Many companiese offer a "balancer" mineral for use with gluten feed and DDGS. Some will be just minerals, whereas some will be mixed/pelleted with a protein source as a carrier. IMHO, the mineral only product is the way to go. You've already got the protein, why spend more for stuff you don't...

    Commodity sheds for feed dealer/mill

Thanks for the recent discussion. I'm now leaning toward a totally enclosed commodity shed that would allow a truck along one long side of the shed, then dump product and unload into bays at a right angle. The truck alley would also be used by a load to move the products to a mixer. Bird...

    Feed Ration

Ouch! I handle DDGS and corn, no SB hulls at this time, nor any molasses. My DDGS price is $140/ton, and corn runs around $145/ton ($4.00/bu). I think they are getting a pretty stout price.

    Let's see what is 12%

Oats, wheat, and barley are all 12% protein or greater. Soybeans will be much greater, unless you can some how extract the hulls off of them. And, all of these feedstuffs will be more expensive to feed than to use corn in the ration.

    DDGS

DDGS (distillers dried grains & solubles) should be limit fed, not free choice; it's like candy to the cows.

    DDGS

No, DDGS should not be fed as a sole ingredient of a ration. It has too much protein and fat and will cause issues. Research finds that up to 50% is about all you should do, and that is in limited situations - 10-30% is more common. Having said that, in some rations it could be possible for...

    Soybean Hulls?

Soy hulls aren't that high in protein...around 12%. They are high in fiber, medium in energy. Price is kind of high over the winter, but they should lower come spring. ADM at Des Moines is $115/ton, but that is probably the cheapest in the midwest.

    Commodity sheds for feed dealer/mill

I've recently started selling DDGS to local cow/calf and small feedyard operations. Right now I'm storing a semi load's worth in a bulk bin, then running it out into a mixer for weighing, then loading into the truck. A little time consuming, but its low-budget at time being and it works. As...
