    Linebreeding

Thanks for sharing some of your wisdom skangusguy! What you're saying is that it concentrates good genes, but also concentrates undesirable genes as well as additionally slowing down the rate of input of more desirable genes. That sounds like linebreeding won't get us anywhere, but in trouble...

    Scrotal Circumference

I agree. I've seen folks pay huge amounts of money for supposedly top bulls with obvious abnormalities. Clearly the buyers often fail to notice or like you said, simply do not have a clue what to look out for. I was hoping to start a discussion which should also lead and perhaps slightly...

    Scrotal Circumference

Which problems have you come across most often - not overly straight, swelling of the joints, poor movement?

    Linebreeding

Linebreeding is arguably one of the most powerful breeding techniques known to man. It provides us with the opportunity to save time. Because yes, breeding does take time, and a lot of it. By not making use of linebreeding techniques, a lifetime is often not long enough for us to achieve our...

    Scrotal Circumference

Interesting. Have you ever come across a bull with substandard rear legs?

    Scrotal Circumference

Very interesting SBMF. It must be quite a bummer for the bull - being caught up in such a predicament. What does one do in such a situation I wonder? Perhaps fetch a bucket of warm water? Ever witnessed any issues with regards to fertility subsequently? You started off by asking "So what do...

    Scrotal Circumference

I agree, but what exactly did you mean by rear legs?

Thanks for participating in the discussion regarding this topic, it's nice to hear from you again SBMF. Your observations are very interesting and completely in line with what I know out of my own experiences, as well the observations and experience shared by some of the other folks. You are...

    Scrotal Circumference

Thanks for sharing Snoopdog. I find what you're saying, very interesting and it's something I would personally be monitoring future. Hopefully someone else out there has perhaps witnessed something similar and would also be as kind as to mention it on this thread.

    Scrotal Circumference

Hi Everybody! The topic of scrotal circumference (SC) is one I've always found quite intriguing and honestly quite puzzling. In my younger years, grey bearded breeders used to share their vastly different opinions with me, regarding this matter. Some believed that an adult bull's SC should...

    Inbreeding

Thanks Son of Butch, I appreciate your input. What you mentioned about the correlation between testicle size etc. is something I've always found intriguing. I'm planning on posting a new thread on the topic. Please be on the lookout for it and perhaps tell us more about the correlation you've...

    Inbreeding

Very true. You have a good point. Still, more defective genes are probably present everywhere we look (in their recessive form). So if XY does carry the defective gene seen in X, but not in it’s dominant form as seen X, would it matter?

    Inbreeding

Hi Sstterry! Thanks for your reply. I agree. In this case the recessive genes were probably present in both the sire and dam of X. Lets say that Y is definitely a non carrier of this recessive gene. The question is, is there any chance that the abnormalities seen in X would or could be carried...

    Inbreeding

Hi Everyone Just a quick question: If a bull X was line bred or inbred to the extent that a physical abnormality or abnormalities are present, and we combine X with a completely non related cow Y, would X’s physical abnormalities be carried over to calf XY or would Y have “neutralised” these...
