    Ellingson Chaps

For sure. 2293 progeny records. There’s something to it. Even if it doesn’t wreck you in the first generation, you’ve introduced those genes into the mix

    Ellingson Chaps

From what I’ve seen, I think chaps stamps them well just like his sire. And does it with some CED and CEM thrown in the mix. Resource is a -1 for CEM and Charlo is a -3. You're right, those kind are easy to sell from the eye appeal standpoint, but that combination would have to rear its ugly...

    Spring Breeding, What's Everyone Using?

Where did you hear he was gone??

    Calves Growing

They were very good. It’s not very often you see month old calves with that much shape and muscle to them already.

    Good cattle.

    Hooks Beacon 56B Calf

Awesome. I saw some beacons last week that were coming on a month old. They were already shaping up nicely.

    Semen Deposition during AI

I have found that the “3 cervical rings” thing is misleading. Some cows seem to have one or two. Others about 5

Use a vitamin before and/or after AI

I vaccinate and give multimin 30 days prebreeding every year. It’s a very good product. Mineral intake can be so varied cow to cow. Me keeping it out in front of them all the time can vary too. I like to be sure they all have a high quality chelated mineral in them at the right time. It’s also...

    Herding heifers with a drone

Would you mind to post a picture of that Ron? Much like invyour county, water gaps are very challenging here

    SAV Bruiser

Thanks. And they definitely are moderate. But still competitive as feeder calves. I weighed my calves last spring in June, and again in October at weaning. I compared their ADG from birth to June, and then June to October. I started creep feeding in June. It was interesting my Bruiser calves...

    SAV Bruiser

Here’s a yearling heifer I kept out of him. Docility is about average. Very big middled cattle. She is out of one of my best cows. I have big hopes for her.

what epd's do you pay attention too??

Loosely in order for female selection, HPG, WW, DMI, Doc, CEM, SC. Also like to keep some Marbling in there and stay positive on backfat. I have optimums for milk and frame size, but they can be worked around if all the other pieces are there. Simple enough right?

    CCR Frontier & CCR Boulder

I have not seen any Frontiers, but have seen several Boulders. They are as advertised. Deep, stout, lots of shape and style. I think he is the better bull. They are moderate framed.

    Value of Genomics

Personally I still use proven bulls. For me, it’s more about accelerating the pace at which we can identify good bulls, rather than shoving a new crop of yearlings on everyone and forgetting about the proven ones. And most of us still have a cleanup bull, and they can’t be proven, so I like to...

    Value of Genomics

When you went to a bull sale before genomics, a bull was what, 0.05% accurate at best? with often times blank spots in his data set. And the EPD's were basically just parent estimates. Now a yearling bull profile has a value for every EPD, and accuracies vary from .25 to .50% This helps the...

    Value of Genomics

I think genomics has been an invaluable tool for all segments of the industry. For many traits it is worth the equivalent of data on 25-30 calves. Yes the raw scores can sometimes make you scratch your head, but I really believe most of the time it’s right. They’ve come a long way since they...

Best Bull your neighbors have never heard of..

Exactly. That’s something else that I think makes him pretty cool. Total outcross. And from what I’ve read and heard, Nelson’s run them pretty hard out there and there’s no frills in their program.

Thanks! Hopefully all the terminal calves come out as bulls and all the maternal matings come out as heifers
