    Post a random picture

Temps are dropping here today and tonight. Was 60 at wakeup this morning... it is already down to 48.... We are officially in the "abnormally dry " category here at the farm... had 2 dark threatening clouds go over and got a total of BARELY 1/10th of an inch in the rain gauge... this...

    New bull time

I agree, with @gcreekrch ... he is not perfect but I have seen alot worse... Get the cows bred, give him a little time to mature... We just sold that gelbvieh that had the scrotal hernia... weighed 1600 and brought over 2100 after commissions. Let yours grow a little, he might look better...

    Finally sold Molly's calf

We have sold over 40 steers the past 2 months, some we wintered over and weighed in the 7 wts... some recently that were 500+ that were weaned and vaccinated and all... just these 2 were plain stupid... Most get used to coming in the barn to eat at the bunk and don't do more than move out of...

    Finally sold Molly's calf

Glad you got him gone... Yes you could have done better if he was a steer... but what you got is what steers were bringing not too long ago... so you did good... especially at that weight... He looked to be in good condition. This is the time to sell ANYTHING that anyone is contemplating...

Severe storms hitting north ala and Ga

So sorry for all that have been affected by these tornado's. I understand there are some deaths, and the damage is unbelievable. We have been inbetween the rain areas, and our winds have been light and steady a few days... nothing like what others have had. We also have missed most of the...

    Calhoun sale 5-07

My son and I were milk testing in Weyers Cave last night but I wanted to go. There are alot of black/dairy cross cows that go through Harrisonburg. There was a cow sale in Staunton Tues night but I didn't go. We are down about 30 cows from where we ought to be...mostly from culling. With the...

    Calhoun sale 5-07

I meant that there were 3-400 head at the sale... I did see some nice lambs bring in the $3.00 range a couple weeks ago... You can get the sale results on their website... Shenandoah Valley Livestock Sale....

    Dry cows

Are these some of your one and dones? or will they get brought down and worked and put out to pasture somewhere else? That's pretty remote looking country.

    Last heifer calved today.

Congrats on the "last of the heifers to calve"... The "heifer" is pretty good sized for being 17 months... Did she get caught by the bull without you realizing it? Those Jersey's and jersey crosses are famous for that....

    Jersey

I consider the behavior of your heifer perfectly normal... Yes, I agree that the calf is repositioning and it causes a little discomfort... I have seen discharge anywhere from 24 hours to 3 weeks prior to calving... Relax.... she will surprise you one morning with a new baby.... and all this...

    Calving 2024 Charolais

Congratulations on a successful year... That last one looks like a nice sized heifer. Your birth weights are great, especially if you didn't have to help too many of them. You have some real nice cows, good size, and from last years pictures, they raise some dandy calves... How has your...

    The “free” ones

I don't personally see much in the way of Pyr /Anatolian in the one. Looks friendly and a nice dog... some lab and Heinz 57 more likely... They seem to know a good thing now that they found you. Glad they got you.

    Pay day

Shipped the 1600 lb young bull that had a scrotal hernia.... loop of intestine down into the scrotum along side one testicle... not common but the vet said he had seen one... could be fixed with surgery but not worth the cost with what bulls are bringing... He brought 1.35/lb... check was over...

    Calhoun sale 5-07

Seeing the same thing in Harrisonburg @kenny thomas ..... goats and sheep out the ying yang every week.... and some are pretty rough looking too.... don't know where they keep coming from. I'll bet there were in the 3-400 range also... I did not stay to see, I stopped to pick up a check from...

    Irrigation water.

We had 2 inches total, the first 3 days of April, after only 2 inches in March.... had .5 inch mid April... that was it.. Temps were in the 70's and 80's with constant wind most of the month so dried everything out. We have had sprinkles that didn't make barely a trace in the rain gauge...

    Udders influenced by bulls?

If the calf can suck without much help... and will probably favor the back teats the first few days in my experience... at 12, I would not be so critical... If she was 6 like @pdubdo 's cow, I probably would not keep a bull calf for a possible herd sire. I would however, not , just can her...

Open House at the Vet Clinic

That is wonderful for her to be so "into it" and willing to learn and do ..... so many of our vets around here are small animal or large animal... several specialize in horses, and my preferred vet clinic is large animal only but does "farm animals".... mostly cattle... but some horse farms...

    Marijuana

I used to cocktail waitress.... saw more than my share of "one too many" drunks. That was right when they started pushing the "take the keys" thing. I never saw the pull of alcohol even as a kid. My parents might have friends over on a Sat night and would have a pitcher of screwdrivers...
