    Nurse cow or not. Thoughts

Nurse cow updates: We are about ready to wean and ship the two largest holstein/jersey steers. Likely the last calves to sell before the cattle (Dairy and beef) make their trip to our new place. That will leave two smaller calves on each jersey until we are there and settled and I can get back...

Nice! Yes we bought a group from a "well known" breeder that were awful. They were sold. Only have semen left in the tank. We've used it to breed to smaller jerseys and the calves have been some of the best jersey crosses we've had to date shockingly. A lot of our experience with them has...

    Trouble?

I'm sorry for the loss of the calves. Were they full term? Hopefully she heals up and gets out of withdrawal and you can get her shipped and recoup some of the costs.

    Screw worm confirmed

I've seen countless ranchers commenting saying they won't report any cases they find. I think there is fear that this will turn into a quarantine and euthanasia situation like bird flu ended up being.

Bottle calf! Some say I'm crazy...

I absolutely love this! 😂 She looks really good! So where's the replacement lawn mower?

Cow #2 has taken her calves and is now with them full time. Watching for over eating scours. Once we're clear of those concerns I'll turn them out to pasture together. So far so good with them. Cow #1 is still being a pill. She takes a bit normally then loves her calves once she takes them. For...

Update on the house cows ;) @MurraysMutts The new additions are doing pretty well. So far we have a little loose stools from a couple but the two I expected full on scour battles with so far are good. One cow (cow #2) has taken them as her own already. Technically one she took already but she...

Wow. That's completely different than the stock yards around here. Butcher cows (beef and dairy) go first thing in the morning. After butcher the head calves go followed by bred cows and pairs. Then feeders of all sizes. That's where the issues come. After the larger pen lots and preferred...

The largest most sought after sale yard in CA. Things have gotten worse there. They put them through at the end of the sale in spite of them being dropped off early. The littler guys get the shaft there. It's gotten worse. Won't be going back thankfully.

Welp I didn't get pictures but the 3 holstein steers weighed 405 each. Got $3.10 a pound for them. Sadly have way more than that into them but it is what it is. Crazy that holstein drop calves are going for the same price as 400#'rs.

3 house cows. 🫣😂 As FarmerJan said we're movin' to MO. God has blessed us with a nice farm.

    Tick borne diseases...Alpha Gal Allergy

I've seen a few of this guys videos. They are always funny. Hadn't seen this one before. Actually learned a few things. Thanks for posting it! Really glad you are getting your life back. I'm hopefully there will be far more success stories sooner than later.

Just an update from around here. Crazy how fast things change. Our main cow (cow #1) who was due to be dried up in a few weeks has been acting a pill lately. Checked her and she's lost her calf. So I'm currently synchronizing her as well as her daughter (cow #2) who I'd already planned on...

    Artificial Insemination Sire Prospect Scouting

Dairy cross is far more valuable. Many dairies we know are crossing nearly everything on beef because the drop calve value almost doubles.

I meant to keep them they have little value. They have far more value shipped as soon as possible after birth.

I need to get better about carrying my phone and getting pictures to post. I'll try and get some uploaded soon.

Been a while since I've updated. Moving and all. Beef cow that lost her calf went to auction. Brought good money. Our oldest jersey (the one who I started this thread on) is raising the 3 holstein steers well even though she's far into lactation. She's maintaining on the fresh green pastures...

    Artificial Insemination Sire Prospect Scouting

I am not sure who would be interested in that. Maybe a backyarder might be interested. Most dairies know what genetics they are using and what the offspring is offering. Bull calves have little value to most dairies. They are gone withing hours or a day or two after birth. Not work keeping them...

    Thieves steal 64 calves

I wish I could get $2,000 for a 13 week old holstein. Branding still seems like a good idea. MO doesn't do brand inspections. I'm still branding my cattle. A good way to prove ownership. Might add tattoo's and a notch in all our calves ears too. Good idea to think about. The more proof the...
