    Marketing Cattle

Does anyone on here sell their cattle directly to the consumer (butchered)? I'm interested in raising cattle from start to finish, but it appears I will be the oddball in that. Anyone doing that?

    Heat...Black...In the Shade

I notice your location is simply described as "Cold place!!!", so it's hard to believe you would lose a black cow to heat. Could you elaborate on your location so that we can have a better understanding of the comparison?

I may have completly lost my mind but..

I'm surprise because I would expect most people on this forum to be more self-sufficient and the type to enjoy the feeling comes from raising their own food, not counting the better taste. I didn't realize it all came down to what the highest rate of return was.

I may have completly lost my mind but..

I'm surprised to see so many people against raising pigs on a cattle and farming forum just because it doesn't save a ton of money and it requires work. Hmmm.

    Woodmizer Band Sawmill

If you can get that rig for $24k, I'd say jump on it! A new LT40 hydraulic mill starts at right about $28k, and that's with the base 26hp gas Kohler engine and no upgrades.

Can you afford to operate the same old way?

Fertilizer is definitely an expense you want to control but I wouldn't worry about depreciation. Depreciation is more of an accounting expense as opposed to an actual one. If anything,.that's the expense you want to keep/increase since it will lower your taxable income

    Bad Time to Get In?

I guess I should clarify that I think it's a good, fun way of saving that has other benefits. I know there are possible investments with higher ROIs, but if the market crashes or the proverbial SHTF, you can't eat mutual funds! ;)

    Bad Time to Get In?

Thanks I for your replies! I do have access to the land and most of the equipment. I plan to buy the cows using cash and this will not be my sole income. Mostly a hobby and maybe something that can help save for my children's (ages 5, 3, 2) college. Thanks again for the advice.

    Bad Time to Get In?

I've been a long-time lurker on this forum and have learned a lot from you guys and gals. I've always wanted to own some cattle and am really hoping to make that dream a reality in the next few months, but so many people are telling me now is the wrong time to get in due to the high cattle...

My guys come up with the craziest things

Gotta love American ingenuity! The steps scare me, but overall it's a good solution to a problem. I bet it's going to make the build go much faster.

    Cost of pasture grazing

Actually, the unearned rental income is an opportunity cost, but you do not deduct it from the income you make in using it in another fashion. IYou would simply compare the money you could make by renting the land out versus the money you make by grazing it. Also, depreciation is an accounting...
