    Hello from Deep East Texas

Camping up at texoma lake and got ran in the camper by over 2” last night. This happened while I was reading about “el Nina” going to be extra dry this year. Cows standing belly deep in rye grass and 70 bales hauled in this week. Sure confusing this time of year

    Hello from Deep East Texas

That’s a lot of thick rye. What kind of hay does rye make? Does it retain any protein? What is your bull that you have a white face calf?

    Hello from Deep East Texas

I can go out every evening just before dark and there are 30+ in the dead trees along the deep creek at back of our place. By 9:00 or so they are hunting in the morning

    Dang replacement heifers

We kept 4 last year for herd expansion after the hay shortage for 2 years. First 2 no problem, 3rd one this morning, to narrow and we lost the calf. 3rd likely today or tomorrow so fingers crossed. First heifer we have ever had trouble with so been pretty lucky.

    Replacement females???

    Hay Unrollers

Correct. We unroll in google weather and during bad weather we will put out enough hay in feeders to get past the wet spell to save tearing up ground. Keeps these old bones warm and dry also

    Waterline plumbing question

What type of pipe are you planning to utilize? We just finished a well last week and should have a pond completed in august to catch the fall rains to fill but want to do some water transfer to a couple more paddocks in order to stockpile for winter

    Retirement

Retirement is 9 months away and to be honest scares the hell out of me. There is always work on the farm and I’m always behind but once I leave that office it will finish up much quicker. Been working since I was 14 and just can’t imagine not! I’ll find out though

Just wanting variety in their diet?

Our cows use the hackberry as a dessert it seems. When we pull them off the wheat in the evening they usually head up the hill and spend a few minutes trimming up the trees. I read about Kathy at on pasture training cows to eat weeds. Have any of you actually seen or tried this? Sure would be...

    Buzzards killing mature cows

I have watched exactly what you described. Shot a coyote, threw him in field near tre line, set up my pop up blind in tree line and waited. Red heads circled and found him and blacks ran them off.

Or maybe that fresh calf with its eyes and rear gone

    Buzzards killing mature cows

It’s interesting to really watch them circle while honing in on the smell till they find the dead animal
