Welcome to Cattle Today. I applaud your effort and wish you luck in tracing back bloodlines from 70 to 80 years ago. The Hereford Association website has an animal search function if you have a registration number. You can look for progeny and work forward to present time.

    Hello from Deep East Texas

That song was popular when I went to SFA back in the early 1970's.

    Bull nettle

That was over 30 years ago before we knew about or had good surfactants. We have come a long way since then.

    Bull nettle

The secret to controlling bull nettle is to spray when they are in bloom. I have had success using 2,4-D and a surfactant. An old retired county agent told me to use 2 tbsp. of 2,4-D, 1 tbsp of liquid Dawn soap in 1 gallon of water. With a hand pump up sprayer, spray individual plant to point...

    MSMA

Unfortunately, people use products in manner that the product was not intended. MSMA is labeled for use in turf grass. Read the entire label it clearly says "do not feed treated forage to livestock or graze treated areas"

    Old round bales

Try turning them up on end and pouring about 8 gallons of molasses and let it soak in. A couple of days latter go set them on a bare spot in pasture.. What the cows don't eat will add organic material and nutrients for worn out ground.

    Hello from Deep East Texas

Travlr, there were tornados in his county yesterday. I messaged him and heard back that the storms passed to his northwest.

    Protein or Energy

Murray, you have about half of the story. It takes about 30 days to get back to what the calf weighed the minute you pulled it off the cow. It is the health aspect that makes a weaned calf more desirable. I am going to use an analogy that I think everyone can understand, Your unweaned calf...

    Protein or Energy

No, the buyer wants a calf that has gone through the bawling stage, knows what a feed and water trough is for and is less likely to get sick.

How much hay can a cow eat?

If you can let those cows in that ryegrass for a couple of hours each day and then pull out it will stretch hay supplies. Even leaving them in a day every third day will help.

    wormer

Most minerals are formulated to be consumed at 3 to 4 ozs/day. The Safeguard feed is designed to be fed at pf 1 lb per 1000 lb of body weight.

    cattle body structure/condition

I suspect that cow is older than you think or has been on short grass long enough to wear her teeth down. She also might not be all Angus (maybe a Hogus - Angus x Holstein). Does she breed back on schedule? If she raises a good calf and rebreeds on schedule, it may just be the way she is.
