    First time haying

This is why I like to use a tedder on day 2. Saves me from having to double rake when the time comes.

    red clover

Ted it in mornings with dew on. Otherwise you'll sling the leaves off. The weather we have right now I'd leave it lay in the swath for 5 days then rake around 10 o'clock the morning after it was "definitely dry enough to bale." Is it mostly fescue with a touch if clover? Or mostly clover? I...

    Clover Galore

This was grazed end of April. Has barely begun to bloom.

    Hay cutting time !

Can that be put on an 8 series baler? I use a 458. I've considered finding a New Idea 4845 or 4855 to replace it with. Not sure the sizes new idea did make. Our 4844 makes too small a bale. Too many trips feeding.

    Hay cutting time !

That settles my mind a good bit. I really liked baling with thr soft core new idea. Seemed real forgiving. Haying red clover is the only situation that makes me have negative opinions on the forage. This barn belongs to someone else, so just being extra paranoid. I've got thermometers...

    Hay cutting time !

The first ground I dropped was very clover heavy and should have dried a 5th day before baling. Getting temps between 110 and 120 after 11 days. Had to be the stem moisture. Bales have squatted just a little bit. Got the problematic 16 bales in the barn with 4 inches between each. How long...

    Clover Galore

I had to pull mine out the barn from last week. Had some weird readings. Hoping these cold nights will cool them down. They're not squatting though. Rolled with dew moisture after dark. I thought it was super dry the day before. Evidently not. What I've got down right now is taking it's sweet...

    Clover Galore

It's definitely going to have pros and cons regardless of which way we go. Both intended and unintended. Who knows though... could turn dry and hot next month and I graaze it by August/September. That's been the trend the last few years.

    Clover Galore

Won't be any thatch anyways after it's strip grazed this fall. I went back and walked it again, really is pretty bad. Don't think it'd make hay worth wasting diesel on. This spot the stuff laid over was 6 inches high. Feels awesome walking on it. Lol. Good on the ol back.

    Clover Galore

That's where I'm at too. I'm dying to see what happens. Would have to be a hell of a soil improvement if nothing else. Would be a lot of mass there to strip graze this fall/winter.

    Clover Galore

I really appreciate you sharing that. I went back just now and looked again. If it doesn't get any worse between now and the next weather window, I'm going to cut the front half of it. It's not as bad as the back from what I can tell. So thanks for the encouragement.

    Clover Galore

Dug up a clover root today, curious about the nitrogen fixation. The one I got had a pretty good amount I feel like. Especially up top near the surface. But also had them 7 inches down. Roots broke off at 8 inches.

    Hay cutting time !

Hope it turns out for you all.

    Clover Galore

Correct. No trouble with regrowth. There's about 12-16 inches of pretty clover above the mat. The leaves down in the mat are black and gooey, the stems just laid down and turned up again and are growing, so I'm not concerned with it being a problem in that way. I'm thinking it's going to work...

    Clover Galore

Well, went to check on the pasture ground I planned to hay in the coming weeks. The clover has been laid down for at least 2 weeks and is rotting on bottom. 3 to 5 inch mat of the stuff, black and gooey. Was sad. Lol. It had been up level with the 4 wheeler seat. What's yalls thoughts on...

    Clover Galore

My most favorite legume. My Papaw calls it "begger's lice." I like the name tick-trefoil. Has a leaf like a soybean. I've encouraged it since I got here and it sure has responded favorably with grazing. It's now everywhere.

    Clover Galore

Have been torn as to whether to cut some for hay or just let it stockpile til I can get animals to it. It's been so wet and I'm so behind on hay that it's going to stockpile til I get to it. 😆 The last picture is 2.5 or 3 weeks of regrowth. Been waiting 3 years for a good spring, and we finally...

    Pasture Pet Peeves

Neighbors granddaughter and her new boyfriend did that a couple weeks ago. They shot for 5 or 6 hours. I assume it was a .22 l, otherwise they spent some serious coin that day.

What are the going lease rates for pasture?

I've paid between 30 and 50 per acre here in TN. Has been worth every penny.
