    Grain Bin

Define grain bin? If you’re in the Midwest a grain bin is 3,000 to 400,000 bu to hold dry shell corn, soybeans, or wheat. Or are you talking about a bulk bin that holds several tons of feed and has a cone bottom? Bulk bins should be anchored to a concrete pad. I have one that is lagged to rail...

    Occupational hazards for a Heeler

I’ve had a couple get rolled pretty hard. In the moment they always seem to get up mad and ready to get back in there. That’s one of the main reasons they’re my favorite. They’re so tough for their size. Might be sore in the morning though.

    Cow won’t lay down

There is a great group of folks here on CT with a vast amount of knowledge. Some of us got it from books and some of us from the school of hard knocks. Either way we all take pride in what we do and can sometimes come across pretty strong when we know something is being done in a way that is not...

    Cow won’t lay down

And may I add; if bute worked on the show cow it will work on the commercial cow… and just like that it’s in the food chain. You trust your vet that’s good. Your vet should know better.

    Cow won’t lay down

Well Dexamethasone causes abortions in cattle. Like @wbvs58 said , Bute isn’t for cattle. Bannimine is what you’re looking for. As far as the cow herself; the Dex probably helped her. She’ll probably get better. Probably not worth keeping her once you think she can make a trailer ride to the...

    2024 Stocker Project!

You mean like backgrounders? Grow them and sell them to the feed lots? I don’t know of any packer that will buy 8wt cattle. I will agree that 100lbs a month is the goal.

What cow horse stud to breed to 7 AQHA rope mares.

Bet Hesa Cat something like him. Stallions are just like high dollar bulls or worse. What’s hot right now won’t be in a couple years. I haven’t followed stallion lines for a several years. I don’t know what’s hot right now.

Best first cow to get to raise to breed for beef and gentle disposition. What is best age to get them? I would like to get 2 and raise 2 calves

Cattle are herd animals. They need a companion and if given the opportunity will leave to find one. Butchering size is a combination of; Age, Weight and FINISH. But ultimately it’s the consumers personal preference. Most of the cattle I sell are 18-22 months old. Will weigh 1,400 + pounds...

    blue heeler or australian sheperd?

Got to be a Blue Heeler. Hard as nails and loyal to a fault.

    Semi Load Out Chute

I built one back in’08 for the farm I used to herdsmen for. 16’ railroad ties for the posts. Treated 2x8’s for the sides, two 1/2” bolts at every overlap. Rail road ties for the floor with 2x2x1/4 angle iron for the cleats. The floor rotted out and I replaced it with 3x12’s It was only about...

    Goat

Wait; so some goats have two tits, some have four, and some have many many more? Sorry I couldn't help myself 🙄 Very interesting though. I thought all goats like sheep only had two.

    Feeders not eating much

Sounds like they’re about done. Weather has definitely slowed cattle down here too. I’d split the difference between what they have been getting and what they’re eating. Don’t change ingredients! That will totally throw them off. They won’t lose much if any.

    Need working facility

Yes, but you've still got to get in with them. I agree 6 head should be easy. Follow a bucket anywhere kinda cattle. But livestock experience is everything. You or I can probably work cattle with wire panels and baling wire and get away with it. While others need extra safe set ups to make it...

    Need working facility

Once they’re in there they aren’t getting out. The vet I used to work for was crowding a 6wt hfr with a gate to load her in the alley. The hfr decided to stick her head under the gate and lifted it off the hinges. She flipped the gate and the vet. Broke some vertebrae in his neck. He now has a...

    Need working facility

$800 is less than most people’s health insurance deductible. We all know how fast an okay situation can turn into a really bad emergency.

    Large Animal Vets are gone

You could have the opposite problem; we have three large animal vet clinics within 7 miles of home. I wouldn’t call any of them if I had to. We use a vet over an hour away. He semen tests the bulls and drop ships script drugs. I do everything else.

Suggestions for fixed blade sheepsfoot knife for castration

Amazon sells a few. Not sure if any are better or worse. I prefer a Newberry knife. They’re easy to sharpen and have replaceable blades. Small calves I use a scalpel with a #12 blade. I can hold the handle in my teeth, freeing both hands.

Calling all you good diesel mechanics

I just bought the round baler last fall. It’s really at the bottom end of enough hp. The baler is the only thing it has trouble with. I run my TMR wagon everyday all winter no problem

Thank you both @chevytaHOE5674 and @Ouachita . That’s the kind of advice I’m looking for.
