Its so easy to get a black calf from a red cow i don't know why more people don't have red cows.

We have a bunch of red cows and I like them... can usually buy them cheaper than the black ones... Keep all the decent red heifers to raise up too...

I'm still looking for a homo black hereford bull! Tho I'm afraid he may throw too much white with a red baldy cow.
I've a friend needs to use Howie for a month or two, which will work out well for me. I may just sell him after that. I want a better bull for cows. He will feed Howie and take care of him until I'm ready. Wish I knew if he was homo for black, but still, he's more of a heifer type bull. Watching his calves tho. I want to get these new girls calving all tightened up after this batch. Starting over has its own issues......
I've still got 2 nice red heifers. Been weaned since Memorial day! Undecided on keeping them or buying more bred cows tho.

You can send a blood sample or ear notch to a lab and they can tell you if he is Homozygous black. One of the vet professors here sends them for me if I buy a bull to trade on. I take a ear notch and put it in a glass tube and they send it. I think it cost about $30 includes the shipping. Takes 5 to 7 days to get the results.

Hehe. I put the 4 weaner calves in the pasture with the feeder/butcher steer. They're eating LNC finisher as well as all the grass they want.
Might be hard to tell they're weaned come time to sell. We will see!

Was just thinking about creep feeding this morning. With the price of calves it might make sense to get them weaned, sell cow for another heavy bred and move up the schedule for one&done. Thoughts?

I'm all out of one n dones. Well, I've got that one black 4 yr old that hopefully bred back. I'm gonna sell her this fall as a heavy bred I hope. And her black steer too.
I think I gave 3600 for the pair. Not real interested in keeping her. She looks at me funny.
Even old heavy breds are bringing around 3000 right now here. I'm done fooling with that for a while.

I bought 4 one n dones last fall after following Dave's threads to fill in the herd to utilize the extra forage I had while evaluating my heifers. Sale barn said all 7 months. One came home, put me on fence about 4 times then laid down and died trying to calve overnight. Next one had calf the next week and the other 2 gave me January calves. So mixed results for sure. Kept 3 of my heifers and bought 4 heifers to build herd but still thinking about creep feeding and weaning those calves early. Sell cows and buy a few more heavy bred. Need to take advantage of lots of forage
July is the best month to buy one and dones in our area IMO. Its hot and people don't want to mess with short bred cattle as much. If its dry its even better.
I like the 4 to 6 month bred ones that will hopefully calve in September - November range. If it works right, the calves are big by the time it gets and cold and the pair will sell into the strength of the spring market the following April.

In the herd there is 5 Hereford cows I bought this year. I got one Hereford calf, one solid black calf, one black WF, the other 2 which I don't have pictures of are a BWF and a dark red brockled face with no white other than on its face.
These other 2 calves were born the same day. If I hadn't seen them nursing on the cows I am sure I would have got them mixed up. A black Hereford looking cow with lots of white had a BWF calf. A solid black cow had a calf with a ton of white.

I think you did good banding him. His profile shot looks good, but I suspect he's a little more narrow than a good bull would be.

I'm curious as to how wide he will get. That's a very good assumption! He could definitely be a little wider topped. He's not thin by any means. But I sure get what your saying. I'm sure I'll have more pics. He will be a good bill payer.

Good grief. Perhaps the finishing feed is a bit much for weaning calves. Been weaned less than 30 days. Memorial day. I don't think any of em lost any real condition except for maybe a week or so.
Shes fat as a tick!
The little black calf is off the cripple project cow I sold. Been trying to get a good picture of her but she's a little skittish. No plans on keeping her.
I keep going back n forth on keeping the 2 reds heifers. I think my bull will perfect for them. It's just such a long time before they will be producing. And the prices are good to sell. I think the quality may be worth keeping them tho. There's one rwf steer that'll sell for sure.

It’s all up to you and what your goals are as to what to do. I’ve always been sentimental and want to see how heifers will turn out as cows, so more often than not I’ve kept a few heifers almost every year.
Those red heifers would be hard for me to load up and sell. From looks of the cows and the heifers themselves they look like they got a lot of cow potential to me.

They definitely bred the cows they came from well I think. These are their first calves. If they turn out anything like their mothers....

The longer time goes on, the more I like looking at these 2 heifers! Hopefully they settle down a little more. They ain't wild by any means, but I really like cows that almost want petted. Don't have to be that gentle, but close to it anyway.
