One of B's cows had a calf last night. Black cow with a grey calf. I will have to get a picture of it. Talk about calving ease. I don't think it weighs 50 pounds. Actually it took this cow a while to have it. It was the fourth check over about 3 1/2 hours until it was finally on the ground. I know that B and his brothers are fond of using Debrycker genetic. I never thought of them as calving ease. The Charolais growth genetics better kick in because this one has a lot of room to grow. Picture to come.
Not a very good picture. Calf didn't want to stand up. Mama was not a happy camper about me messing with calf. And my stupid dog kept barking at her which didn't help the situation. Better picture at a later date.

Could be coming from the cow. Generally I figure on hybrid vigor kicking in on a crossbred calf especially with a British x Continental cross. Sometimes genetics can throw curves. I’ve had some moderate BW Angus bulls on occasion sire 100# calves from Angus heifers.
When I had Charolais. Most calves were over 100#. Had one particular cow that always one of the lightest if not the lightest calf. Her largest was 88#. They would always wean off as the heaviest or very close to the heaviest. The last calf she had was by a bull that consistently sired calves well over 100# with several at 120# and 2 at 135#.
i was surprised when i weighed that little bull calf at 60#. That calf was tied for my lightest BW Charolais calf with the smallest calf of a set of twin heifers, one at 80# and one at 60#.

Hear that Debrykr name here as well. They go on and on about it. I kinda tune it out, so idk what the big deal is.
Both one of B's sons and a brother of his have some registered Charolais. I know that the brother goes over to Montana for the Debrycker sale on most years. He has a pretty large herd of commercial cows so he must be pretty happy with results he gets.

DeBruyker is the real deal. The best heifer I ever saw was from Brett’s herd. The family together is the world’s largest breeder of Charolais if I remember correctly.
