I'm in the process now of repairing the damage to my Isuzu truck. My wife left the passenger window down a bit a couple of years ago and the rodents moved in setting up home. The fan box, aircon element and heater box just stuffed to capacity with foam and cloth. Smoke poured from under the dash when we tried to use the aircon the following summer, damaged the blower resistor which I'm now having trouble sourcing as it is a 1994 model truck, hopefully have it back together after Xmas. Not easy to get access to everything under the dash in the forward control truck, things are very compact.

I haven't found anything that works to keep mice out for any length of time. I feel like they adapt and can survive on just about any poison after a short while.

I have a few cats and a bucket trap with peanut butter bait or two around with used oil in the bottom. If they make it in the bucket they haven't adapted to surviving in a slurry of used oil yet. Ha
 
I used to work for the largest pest control company in the world. Things what they use. Contac and a WEIGHTED bait box. It holds 8 baits. Weighted box so dogs or animals don't take it off and chew it up. If u make or buy your own blocks you can save lots. Mice it's ok to check as often as you like. Rats set it and don't touch in for a month or 2. Rats are terrified of anything new or moved animals

I live right on the main highway into town. Sometimes at night I'll be up rocking the baby watching the stars out the window and I've seen many times 3+ hours between headlights after midnight. Highway ends 5 miles away in town and there's no place to go in town past 10-12pm most nights.

They did a traffic study just down the road by town a couple years back. On one night their equipment didn't record a vehicle for 6 hours on one occasion.
