    Getting out

I have to say when the trailer was leaving the property it felt like my heart was being pulled out. My oldest cow and leader of the pack had her nose stuck out between the rails of the trailer, eyes wide mooing at me as if to ask what was going on. It's been one day and the place is just very...

New Study, 30 precent more likely to die early

I guess this is my point. It doesn't matter how full of sh** a study is, it still gets major news coverage and any replys from the Beef industry do not. People are left with one side of the story.

New Study, 30 precent more likely to die early

My day is not that much different. It doesn't take much to get 4oz. The CNN report was very vague, like they always are. Eat 4oz. of red meat, die early. I can just see people in the store reaching for a steak to BBQ, remembering the CNN report, and getting Chicken instead.

another down cow, least I know what to do.

Getting kicked is a daily thing around here. It seems like the farm is seeing how much I can take. One thing after another. I have only been doing this for five years, but one thing I figured out right away was that Farmers and ranchers are very optimistic people, next year will be better. Fuel...

    Uterine Prolapse

The calf was aborted at about 4-5 months. Haven't even begun to try and find out why yet. I feed corn silage and hay during the winter. I wonder if she got ahold of some mold in the silage. I check every load I feed, but that stuff grows in clumps.

    Where You At!!

Easer than posting new pictures would be to hold up a clean piece of printer paper and look at it. That's what things look like around here right now, that and maybe a fan to blow the the paper to simulate the wind!

    Where You At!!

I found this intresting site while surfing the web last month, kind of neat. Show us your Farm or Ranch! If you search Johnson Farm and click Foreston, thats my place. The photo is out dated, as it doesn't show my new barn, shop or corn field, but it's fun to play with.http://www.wikimapia.org

    dislocated shoulder longhorn calf

I had a calf a couple of years ago that hurt his shoulder playing with other calfs. The thing was limping to the point of my wife calling the Vet. The Vet gave it a shot of something and said to know more the calf would have to be X-rayed. I told her no thanks. It took about two weeks before the...

    Uterine Prolapse

No, the cow was not hard to get up at all. In fact, if it wasn't for her urterus hanging out, you would think nothing was wrong with her. The vet did spook her and spent five minutes chaseing her around the pasture to get a halter on her. She then laied down and was worn out. Never did get back...

    Land Prices?

The markets have the most to do with it. That and being a one man operation. I work off Farm nights for health Insurance benefits. Getting home at 1:00 am and getting out to do chores in the morning gets rough at 30 below. I feel I can't do the job and it's not fair to the cows. I just had a cow...

    Land Prices?

Three grand an acre here in East Central Minnesota, which will get you a mixture of tillable, woods and marsh. I bought a forty two years ago that is 20 tillable, 10 woods and 10 marsh. Paid $120,000.00. Was going to use it to expand my herd but now want to downsize.

    Uterine Prolapse

When I found the Cow in the morning when I went to feed, she was laying down on her belly as if she was just sunning herself. When I fed and she didn't get up is when I went in to check and found the Prolapse. The Cow was fine except for her uterus hanging out. As far as the procedure, the vet...

    Uterine Prolapse

Having only been raising Beef Cattle for about five years, I just had my first experance with a Uterine Prolapse. The Prolapse was discovered after the Uterus was out of her body about 8 hours. The Vet tried to replace the uterus but was unable to get it into place. She then wanted to try to...
