Need a better idea for portable waterer

This was from last June. I wish it looked that green already this spring. We had more snow this winter than I have ever seen and it just left a couple of weeks ago.

    grazing mature ryegrass and wheat--problems?

Unless you used a large number of animals to tramp lots of it down, I would mow it first. I have grazed rye like that a few times and always had eye problems. Can't be helped when it's that high and they're trying to reach through to the bottom for the leaves and good stuff.

Need a better idea for portable waterer

I've used old bathtubs bolted together end to end for smaller bunches. You can't hurt them. Also make good mineral troughs. For my custom grazing operation with 400+ yearlings I used 2 600 gallon round plastic troughs. Just timed my daily pasture rotations when the water was drank down low...

    Best hay field treatment.

Excellent advice. This is what I would do. I've done it many times and completely rejuvenated old stands of grass. Just don't let them chew it off to the ground. Graze it down, but leave a good amount of growth there. Think of that left over grass as solar panels for the grass to collect sun and...

    rotational grazing?

You are correct in thinking 52,800 feet. That means single strand. For your 40 acres that "10 mile" fencer should be sufficient. But if you have lots of brush against your fence it will draw the electricity down. A "clean" fence is the only way you get what the manufacturer claims on the box...

Milk and fish oil as fertilizer for pastures

We applied raw milk to pastures, berry trees and garden patches for a few years. It's the fats in the milk that are easily broken down into sugars/carbon that make a great food source for the microbes. With raw milk from a grassfed cow you get a lot of beneficial enzymes/microbes as well...

Is he a steer or did I miss one?

Townfarmer, you're from Australia, I thought you people had that technique mastered!! Crocodile Dundee had the grope down to a science. ;-)

    Frame Size

For us it's typically frame score 4 weighing 1000-1300lbs. For us to graze year round in this country requires alot of girth and flesh. If cows go into winter in good flesh, they can lose a little condition over those 6 months and retain a pregnancy. If they go into it a little thin, due to...

Bought a bred heifer yesterday (pic)

I am only looking for clarity here Knersie. You say you have never seen a Lents bull in the flesh, yet you've seen numerous ones fall apart? If you've never seen one in the flesh, do you mean you have heard second hand from people who have had them, that they fell apart?

PDHR 20J STANMORE 47R (Hereford Bull)

Anybody know how big he actually is? My guess is frame 6+ and 2800lbs. With that much mass, he's gotta be heavy. He's an absolute tank. The comment about him eating his offspring made me spit my tea. :lol2: :lol2: I agre about the look in his eye. It appears he has that white in the corners...

Bought a bred heifer yesterday (pic)

If you offered me those 3 heifers without telling me their lineage or history, I would pick the 2 commercials and leave the PB pictured at the top of the page. I would like to see her again next spring, maybe she will change. Look forward to seeing the "dryland" heifer when you get pics of her.

    Thoughts On This

We have 2 yrs data on our sale bulls, not much but it's a start. Ours is through Igenity. In a few years we can probably tell you something conclusive. :lol2:

    You Decide 2010

I don't care what color the cow is, as long as she keeps me in the black. ;-)

    Input on our Heifers, Please

You asked for input on 2 heifers, but only posted 1. The tigerstripe looks OK, but it's tough for anyone to tell you much from that angle. Pics from the side and/or multiple angles would better our chances of giving a fair assessment. As for the black cow, if she's only 6 and looks that thin...
