Electric Fence Problem - Arching at Ground Rod

Two feet or twelve feet makes no difference, as everyone above says, add more ground rods, minimum of three.

    Good meat

If she is fat on grass, I wouldn't change a thing. Pull her off pasture and take her for her appointment on the same day. I’ve done that many times. The fat seems a little different, but I prefer it now.

    baby calf covered in maggots

Any farm supply store should have it. Have to kill the maggots, stop more damage from occurring, use screw worm spray. Might also give some electrolytes. Just the start, good luck.

Bull calf 2 weeks early No suck reflex.

Had a calf that wouldn’t suck, luckily the cow let me milk her and I tubed it for about three weeks. One morning it sucked on my finger as I was starting to feed it, put a teat in its mouth and it went to nursing. Grew okay, sold calf and cow that fall. Not sure I’d have the patience today. Good...

solar eclipse April 8. This town is going nuts over it.

That’s what I’m worried about too, right in the middle of totality, gas stations running out of gas, restaurants running out of food. I’ll believe it when I see it. Some fool opening a fence, I have no trouble picturing that.

    Poison Hemlock

Poison hemlock has never been proven to cause a rash, it is a deadly poison if ingested or absorbed through the skin. It is believed to be the poison used to execute the philosopher Socretes in Ancient Greece, a tea was made with PH and he was forced to drink it according to the written account...

All Keyed Up Over My Tractor

That straight pipe isn’t as loud as it could be. Some of the old Mack trucks I used to work on had straight pipes, and cast on the turbo housing said muffling device.

    Lime Question

Not all extension agents are created equal. When I was trying to figure this place out, the local agent told me the soils in the eastern part of the county do not respond to standard tri-state recommendations. Got my education the hard way, no thanks due to university extension.

    Lime Question

I’ve done that with hi cal lime, burnt the hair off the cows legs, but you could see the difference in the crops to the row. It also caused the pen pack to break down, had to put down fresh straw every day. Ended up cleaning the barn out in January so I wouldn’t run out of straw. Now I just top...

    Lime Question

Your calcium is low and magnesium too high, which makes tight soil. Ratio should be 85% calcium to 15% magnesium. Use a high cal lime or gypsum, forget the ph, your soil is calcium deficient.

    My beef died this morning

Heart attack already mentioned by TC. PAP, pulmonary arterial pressure. Known as high mountain or high altitude disease, simply high blood pressure. A few years ago there were reports of significant feedlot losses from this inherited condition, they would literally drop dead in their tracks.

    Tractor roll offs

Thanks for posting. Good for all of us to remember how dangerous our lifestyle can be. Nick

    Castrating a bull

I’ve done many bulls that size and larger with a burdizzo clamp, no blood, no mess. But it seems my method has fallen out of favor and you need the tool. Yes, you will need to restrain him in something.

    Newbie sorghum sudan seeding rate?

Inter seeding won’t work. Might as well smoke 100 dollar bills.

    Burdizzo

Guess I don’t change easy. I’ve cut my share of hogs, including some pretty good sized ones, just always clamped calves. When the kids started 4-H, fair vet said calves had to be cut or banded so I tried banding and buried a calf that developed tetanus. After that I paid a vet to do them, never...
