    looking for Gelbvieh in NY

I have a couple of neighbors looking for Gelbvieh. One wants a bull, the other is looking for some cows / heifers. Anyone know someone that breeds them? I'm Simmental & Angus. Located in Steuben county. Even northern PA would be ok. Thanks.

    Calf with fatal birth defect.

Holy Cow. I just had the exact same condition in a calf that I put down. Born Saturday - up & nursed. 24 hours later, laying on side, back leg kicking, head jerking around. I have never seen this before. Vet examined the calf and said it was Atresia coli. The colon was "deadended".

    Joint Ill

Update on my calf. He is doing much better. I had to hit him hard with penicillin a second time but he is out with the herd walking without a limp. Sometimes things do work out.

    Joint Ill

I have a 3 week old calf that got joint ill through its umbilical cord that didn't dry up with the wet spring we had. I had the vet out & the calf was septic. He gave the calf a 50/50 chance to make it. I have hit the calf with NUFLOR / EXCEED / Penicilin. He is nursing & bright eyed - just...

    Rehoming

Boondocks, here is the 9/6 report from Fingerlakes Livestock Auction in Canandaigua. cows-bone utility 51 to 67 If the cow weighs 1400 and got the top price of .67/lb that would only be $938. $1500 for a commercial guy would be just too much. $1200 would be more in line. Also, Fingerlakes is...

    Real Winter Pics

Artesian, You must be located in the Tug Hill area that got slammed with the lake effect snow for a week straight. I'm in Steuben county, so we miss the lake effect snow from both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. I think we have only had 14" since Jan 1st. Great pics.

    burger?

Where in NY are you located? Seems like there should be someone within an hour of you that would like to have you feed their bull for a month or so.

    New to Cattle :)

As you have said there isn't a good availability of the mini. I would say look to the Angus Low Lines. They are a smaller framed animal but not considered a mini. There is a good deal more animals and breeders in CT and NY. As said temperament is very important with what ever animals you bring...

    Drat

Boon, Do you have other cows around your farm? A bull won't wander if there aren't other cows to investigate. Have you looked into renting a bull? I'm picking up a bull this weekend for my neighbor that he is renting for a couple of months.

    Mowing pasture

hello fellow NYer. whether you now or not depends on the pasture itself. if the cows aren't keeping up with the growth, mow half and then mow the other half a week or two later. Where I'm at, we are in a drought area and haven't had pastures to worry about.

    Heifer crop coming along!

We put the bull in with the heifers 3 weeks before the cow herd. It allows the heifers extra time to recover next year after her first calf before rebreeding.

Bout to give up on Craigslist

Boondocks- Have you heard of the New York Beef Producers Assn? It is a great organization to promote beef and beef cattle in NY state. You join for $30 a year. There is a website you can check out. http://www.nybpa.org/index.htm. There are classified ads where you can buy and sell cattle and...
