Best first cow to get to raise to breed for beef and gentle disposition. What is best age to get them? I would like to get 2 and raise 2 calves

@K C Farm do you plan to grain feed them or grass only? Do you have quite a bit of pasture for them and good grass? If you have enough pasture and good grass, you might consider buying a cow/calf pair, let her raise the calf then sell the cow and buy another pair that way you always have a calf...

    Fancy eatin

We generally get food to take home after church on Sundays but as far as eating steak or something out, I'd rather grill one of our steaks and drink a few beers while I do so, it's better and cheaper. I figure when we cook steaks and we both drink 3-4 beers each, that would be a $150 meal out...

    Feeders not eating much

Pretty sure one of the heifers foundered, she sure walks around tender footed, good thing butcher date is only a week away. I had a guy tell me one time that if I fed enough of them, I'd founder one sooner or later.

    Feeders not eating much

I've always been told to never feed anything with molasses to cattle that are being finished because it will cause the meat to have an off taste. I usually finish them on the same ration that I feed when they're growing but have real loose stool at this point due to the protein. These were...

    Feeders not eating much

We had a cool front move in, we are back in the 60s. Yesterday morning after I started this thread, when I went to feed they had cleaned up the bunk as well as last night when I fed. I cut back to 60 lbs/day. Definitely thinking now it was due to it getting hot and humid this past week, there...

    Large Animal Vets are gone

We have a few large animal vets in the area, a few are horse only, 2 of the others will make farm calls but I tried using one of them because he lives about 5 miles from me and has a place there he can Dr but I can't ever get him to answer the phone and rarely answers my texts so I've given up...

    Feeders not eating much

Usually at this point in feeding them out, I start seeing them just not very enthusiastic about eating and leaving feed in the bunk, but I've never seen them go down to half the feed that quick. I'm not a big fan of feeding out cattle when it's hot and humid because it definitely effects their...

    Feeders not eating much

I've got 3 heifers that I bought back in January from a neighbor that didn't breed, I put them on straight chopped corn the day I bought them and have slowly worked them up to 70lbs/day between them. They have been cleaning it all up until this week, now they are probably only eating half that...

    Who is feeding chicken ****?

Gotcha, when I read processed, going through a heat wasn't what came to my mind.

    Who is feeding chicken ****?

The folks I know who have fed it did exactly that, dumped it by the bucket full into the bunk straight out of the litter shed. One told me he had to mix it with molasses at first to get them to eat it and slowly weaned off the molasses.

Backyard grassers must have come to the sale.

That was my thinking, I wear out more front pads than rear.

    Sunn Hemp

I was the one who originally started this thread 4 years ago and just now decided I would try Sunn Hemp. Placed my order yesterday morning from Petcher Seed, got an email yesterday evening stating that they weren't allowed to ship it to Arkansas so they refunded my money. Bummer. I knew some...

Backyard grassers must have come to the sale.

Good point, some of them do last a lot longer now days, especially the 90s models- early 2000s but now I feel a lot are going the other way. Not so much that they will be worn out but they have more issues than they should for the price and age. I'm a big fan of 1999-2006 GM trucks, tahoes and...

Backyard grassers must have come to the sale.

I agree, there are a lot of us that just want a plain Jane truck to use as a truck. You can't even get a stick shift anymore either. Most of today's vehicles have so much stuff on them, they stay in the shop a lot and it cost an arm and a leg to fix them. My truck is 22 years old and my wife's...
