    Other jobs

When I was in high school we hauled hay, 1000 bales per day,6 days a week all summer. Around 100,000 per year. There was three boys on the crew and the boss, we never missed a day or it would be our job. we got paid 2 1/2 cents per bale. Ten years later when I was the boss, I had 24 kids on my...

Average age of a cull cow

Alan, I think you are asking about culling as a managment process, right? If so, I think its great, but there are always exceptions to the rules. [1]Raise replacement heifers to replace 20% of your cow herd every year. [2] Cull 20% +/- of your cow herd every year. [3] After 5 years of this your...

A question for the experts. creep feeding pure bred calves

easy TC, take a breath while I tell you about another big one. I once bought a bred "cow" that was suposed to be bred to the biggest "bull" in america. When the calf finally came it weighed 280 pounds. After just 4 months it tipped the scales at a whopping 1108#. They were a freaky new breed...

A question for the experts. creep feeding pure bred calves

I don't creep for a different reason. In our market they dock fat calves, that paired with the cost of the feed makes it a lose, lose deal for me. JMHO [just my hillbilly opinion]

Dun, you dumb hillbilly! you told it wrong. The city cousins came to visit the country cousins and noticed they had a pig with a peg leg??? "Whats the deal with the pig?" Well last winter we had a flue fire in the middle of the night and that pig risk life and limb to wake us up! "So, it...

Weaning - On the truck or in the pen?

"The Look" As an earlier post was talking about a different look. Feeder buyers can identify truck weaned calves up to 6 or 7 months. Older than that they don't care. But if you wean your calves at 6 or 7 months, and haul them straight in you're getting docked a little weather you know it or...

    land carrying capacity option ?

We use red clover in our hay field and white dutch in our pastures. I've heard crimson is better in the south but has a much higher seeding rate. You can use selective herbacides or spot spray. We have found that the more clover is in a field, the less weeds are in the field. Hillbilly
