    Thoughts on this Marbling?

my thoughts are that almost any steak will taste great if it is prepared correctly. Do you marinate the steaks? do you grill? do you and the kids like almost rare or well done steaks? how about dry rubs? are they cooked slowly under low heat or thrown on a hot skillet and that 1 1/2 steak done...

    Tractor tire size change

the wrong ratio will put a lot of stress on the drive train. especially in working conditions where you have good traction. you will also notice a rapid wear on the tires that are slipping more. you should be able to use the rear tires and find tires that will use the same rims in front. most...

    Cowboy stuff is fun

glad the cowboys had fun. If I had cows that unpleasant to work, they would be heading to the sale barn.

    Scales and Rodents

How big are the holes that you want to keep rodents out? our AC unit would always get mice in the relay control box and make a nest in the relay. had to clean out every year to get AC to work. someone suggested putting steel wool in the hole where the wiring ran through. never had a problem...

    Large Animal Vets are gone

We are lucky in my area also with a vet practice in two different locations. I am about right in the middle with a 20 minute drive to either one. they do both large and small but mostly large. generally great at after hour calls and scheduling around my schedule. One of the older vets retired a...

How to breed out black coat color

I agree with @Warren Allison about the split. even though the heifer is black, she has 50% of Daphne in her gene pool and 50% of the black bull. since the black is the more dominate color, she is black. she will only pass one gene onto her calf thus the 50/50 split. also 50/50 chance of getting...

    Bad luck keeps on coming

I would be interested in how the insurance company handles the final payment if they know you donated some of the meat. around here, you would have to pay the value of the meat that was donated or sold. hope that is not the way it works in your situation and sorry you lost your bull. looked like...

Brand new - looking for any advice/help

Welcome to the CT forum. hope you enjoy your time on here. A loafing shed would be suitable for shelter and calving as long as it is clean and dry for calving. some type of holding area for various reasons (vet, vaccinations, calving problems) is almost a must also. I wouldn't worry too much...

    Timed AI most recent trends?

I am just wondering how you breed cows/heifers that do not settle on first breeding?

    Timed AI most recent trends?

I very seldom use TAI on cows and have never used it on heifers. heifers I use the 7 day CIDR and PG on removal but breed on standing heat. cows also get 7 day CIDR but will use the 7 plus 7 protocol on cows I do not see standing heat with the 7 day protocol. I will use the TAI if no standing...

    ABS' new Alpha Sheaths

I have not used them but looking through the literature about them it says less backflow??? I regularly check my sheathes after breeding and can't say I have ever seen semen residue in my old style sheaths. not sure how sheath design gives better semen deposit into uterus because of the two...

    Weird question about bolts

loctite has different strength ratings for different size bolts. Are you using the right strength? if lock washers don't fix the problem either, you can make thin metal plates with a bendable tab to bend over one of the flats on the bolt head. a flange headed bolt head may work also.

I think I am pricing cattle too cheap!

sounds like you will make a good profit at that price plus save you the time and expense on hauling them to the sale barn. He probable glad you didn't counter offer with $900/head, so it seems to me it is a win win for both sides.
