    feeding a calf

My rule of thumb is on 50 lb bag of milk replacer per calf (usually), and offer good calf starter and hay from day one. Fresh water is also important. I feed 2 times a day, 2 quarts per feeding, and the last week or so I only feed once a day. Bulldog

    bottle feeding question

I agree with everyone so far, some good info. I am currently raising 4 now. I keep mine in 6x6 pins in the barn, and they do well, I let them out and run around in a small lot roughly one acre, on the weekend when I am home during the day. As far as the bottles go, I rinse them out with hot...

    cattle proposition

I believe thats what I am going to do, only makes since now. I found a 10 acre pasture that is coming open in the summer, and I plan on renting that. This will help alot, I figure I could run 10 200 pounders on there along with a little hay and grain until they get up to about 5 or 6 hundred...

    cattle proposition

I see what you are saying, and I have already decided against this idea. The only thing that I was thinking of was, I dont have sufficient pasture here. I only have small 1 acre or so lots for the calves after they get out of the bottle feeding pens. I am going to look at renting some pasture...

    cattle proposition

I have raised bottle calves several times and I am currently raising a few now, but this was not going to be all 25 at one time. It was going to be 25 over the course of a year, about two or three per month, but after reading all of the negative posibilities and experiences, this will be the...

    cattle proposition

My cousin has been in the cattle business for a while, and he has proposed an offer that sounds interesting. He has offered to to go in halvers on 25 bottle calves over the course of a one year period, and also go in halvers on the milk replacer that it takes to raise them. After they get up...

    Bottle-fed calves????????

T-Bone I put wheels under him on Sunday, I let him go for $200.00, had to have money to go and get three more calves. I figured he weighed between 200 & 225, because I literly had to pick him up and put jim on the trailer, never saw one before and he wasn't going in. Bulldog

    Bottle-fed calves????????

Here in NC I pay $50.00 per head for Gurnsey and Red Holstein/Gurnsey cross from one dairy, and I usually get about 4 or 5 a month here lately, and he always leaves them on the cow for 4 to 5 days. He will not sell them less than 4 days old, he says that he owes giving them a good start to the...

pics of my newest bottle calves

This is the red holstein, she's a free-martin heffer calf and a little small but she is really putting away the groceries!! This is my first Guernsey bull calf, dairy owner said he was half Guernsey and half Holstein. What are your thoughts on this one?? Let me know your thoughts...

    salt and baking soda??????

Thats what I thought too. He is on good milk replacer twice a day, and is eating about a pound of calf starter per day, and also eating a little hay. I noticed today that his stool is a little runny, I wonder if this is due to the change in his diet (eating hay, and more starter), and should...

    raising Guernsey bottle calves

Makes since to me, he sure was cussing them like a dog the other day, when he was trying to get them into the barn so they must be dumb!!!! I also noticed that the cows looked real thin, and I asked him about it and he said that it was just the breed.
