Our 40-60 mph winds last week brought us about a train load of tumbleweeds from couple places North of us. Makes for nice windbreak on our upper fences for cattle...lol.

However, they are a pain in the touche around our near pens and house.

Solution:

Put a wooden pallet on dual hay spears on tractor...mashed piles down good. Pallet off. Used spears to move "compacted" tumbleweeds to our burn barrel area. Lit match... now have ashes...lol.

I know this is going to sound stupid, but I always thought tumbleweeds were something on cartoons ie Road Runner. Never gave them much thought but see how they could be a problem with fences and such.

We usedto make a circle about 30 feet across from field fence and just throw them in. Touch a match and the would burn down in minutes. Greasy nasty smoke but just a little ash left.

When bunched together & compacted they almost explode as they burn...very flammible. Most around here are in the 3 to 4' diameter.

Farms/ranches that have a lot are signs of serious overgrazing and poor pasture/range management (if any at all).

 Throw them over the fence, the next north wind will take care of them.

Some 40plus years ago on a ranch in N.M. in a very bad winter the ranch forman let them blow up against the fences and then us ranch hands sprayed all of the fences with a mixure of water and molassis. Cows will run over you to eat all they can get too.We never thought of burning forage, things have sure changed in 40 yrs.
