Owning and operating a farm has it's pluses and minuses. One of the minuses, at least in Maine, is health insurance. Last time I checked before Obama care it was over $900.00 a month for me and my wife and that was with a $2,500.00 deductible. Needless to say we did not have health insurance. On December 23 I signed up for Obama care and was surprised to find based on our income, it was easily affordable. Both my wife and I don’t smoke or drink, watch what we eat and never go to the doctors. We are very healthy and in our 60’s so I took the cheapest silver plan they offered. The plan went into effect Jan 1, on Jan. 2 I passed a kidney stone. I rolled around on the floor from 6:00 PM until 1:00 AM until my wife dragged me out to the truck and took me to the ER. Long story short, I have passed three kidney stones since January. They operated took the rest out after the third one passed. But that’s not all. When they listened to my heart they said I had a significant heart murmur and after tests are now saying my aortic valve has only two leaves instead of three and has worked harder all my life because of this but is now failing. I will be having open heart surgery in about a month. There is a lot of BS out there about Obama care both for and against, most of it driven by politics. All I can say is I don’t know if Obama care saved my life but it sure saved the farm.
