Help Support CattleToday:

It sucks to lose a calf. So far this year I have lost four. I think the cow laid on one, and the other three were stillborn.

Its always nice to have the same number of calves as cows. Last year I had 36 from 36 but the numbers got made up with a set of twins. A 2nd calver had a still born, $hit happens and something usually stuffs things up.

Ken
It's better for her to have a calf nursing as her own calf already was nursing. If the calf died at birth or never nursed, then it's a lower risk of udder problems after drying out. There was one occasion when cow had lost her calf at 2-3 days age. Her udder was closed at the next calving. Udder was full, but no milk coming out. Wouldn't want that to happen for such young cow too.

Some update pics of the calves and soon to be moms.
Just abit older than 2 weeks, but growing like a weed!

Hopefully all will be out on grass next week.

Abopted heifer with the cow, which has raised her from 2 months age to the weaning. Cow has two biological daughters in the herd, but don't have close connection to either of them. On the other hand, these both spend their time together very often.
Heifer is due on the 3rd of June, but she seems to be abit closer.

Well, it looks that those, who gets mentioned, calves quicker. Adopted heifer just calved a limx bull calf this evening. 278 days gestation, around 85lbs.
