Gale, here is a mini for ya. This little girl is a 10 month old calf out of a polled Dexter bull that I A.I.'d to a horned Dexter cow. I don't know what my mother wants me to A.I. this girl to this summer. Any suggestions on an easy calving, polled bull?

First thing you should do is find someone with smaller arms to AI her! :lol2:

I had that thought myself 3way...............she is a little sip of water. I may tell mom to hire the little lady vet for this job. I would have to do it from my knees to save the ol' back.

That kind of goes along with a prostate exam. Some men say find a women doctor with small hands. The others say it doesn't matter, they all feel like Andre the Giant.

Hoss, has the heifer been tested for Chondrodysplasia (I'd guess non-carrier) and PHA? It's good to know her status even if she is AI'd to a non-carrier of either. Who's her sire?

I'm sure you realize there are no EPDs for Dexters. I believe all the AI bulls listed here are negative for Chondro and PHA. Here's the ADCA list of AI bulls:

http://www.dextercattle.org/AI%20Bulls.htm

Personally, I like Cache Mudflipper except he has horns. Semen is reasonable at $25/straw.
If you absolutely positively cannot have horns, I also like Hillview Red Wing, but semen is $65/straw.

If you find what you like, the owners can probably give you an idea of calf birth weights if you ask them.

Does this help?

Gale, I want to say the sire came out of Georgia. A Belle Fourche bull I think so I am pretty sure their bulls are chondro and PHA free. My mother ordered it I just performed the A.I. service. She is thinking about having me A.I. this heifer to a mini-jersey. It just makes me nervous working with 150.00 per straw semen. There is allot of pressure to get it right. She really likes the Dexter x Jersey cows. I guess the upside with the mini-jersey is the calf should be about the size of a small dog

Hoss, a lot of people like to cross Dexters with Jerseys...I guess the cross makes a good family cow that produces a bit more milk than a straight Dexter.

$150 per straw? No thanks. Yes, Belle Fourche bulls are probably fully tested and good sires. I don't know how big/small mini jerseys are. I've heard of one named Pvt. Pyle, supposed to be good, but I really have no idea. The family cow board might be able to recommend something...they have LOTS of Jerseys over there: http://familycow.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=cow.

Edited to add:
Hoss, I found the Pvt. Pyle info (yes, he's a mini Jersey)...AnnB (I think she's a member on CT too) owns semen; here's info:

Thanks Gale. I will check out that board.

Have you seen the prices on those mini-jersey cows???? Wow! 3 to 5k is very common for a weaned calf. They look like deer fawns when they are calves. Cute little critters.

here is AnnB's web site for Private Pyle
http://www.freewebs.com/arrowheadridge/apps/webstore/
and this is another bull she just had collected
